Existing within the hollow trunk of a large, gnarled oak tree, the Chamber of Knowledge is a kind of Elvish library. It magically grows as part of the tree itself and does not impede the trees health. It is bigger on the inside than on the outside. (Disclaimer: No, it's not the Tardis. I don't care for that show.)

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri walked into the Chamber silently, her bare feet not making any noise on the soft ground. All her life she'd lived as a shadow and grown up being sure to never be seen or heard.

Evony followed her inside and gasped in awe at the enormous size. Several of shelves rose high above her head toward a domed ceiling formed by the canopy of a tree growing in the center of the round, dirt floored foyer. Doors appeared and disappeared at random everywhere she looked. "So... it's obviously very easy to get lost in here. Do you know your way around?"

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri nodded. "Yes. I would come here in secret when I had the time and would read thousands of scrolls to try and find my family." She told her.

Evony decided not to ask about the girl's family at the moment. "Impressive." She said. "I imagine you would have learned a lot, then. Where to then?" Her words trailed off as she glanced distractedly at a large tome that seemed to levitate by its own volition. It flipped open to a random page. She could see that the text was in Elvish runes, but before she could read it, the page flipped again. This happened multiple times, and each time, the language changed as well. It would be Dwarvish one moment, and Orcish the next. Even on pages she'd already seen, the runes would be unfamiliar the next time around. "How...?"

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri giggled softly and shook her head. "This is an Elven library. All the books are bound and laced with Elvish magic." She told her and then hurried off. "Follow me." She told her and opened a door.

Evony cautiously stepped into the room. A snowy white barn owl flew overhead with a scroll in its talons. Tiny glowing orbs floated lazily around the room in every direction.

When one landed on Evony's shoulder, she could see it was a pixie. She was vaguely humanoid, with irridescent blue skin, pointed ears, and delicate wings, like those of a dragonfly. Her large eyes, though solid black, shone with curiosity and joy. She seemed to whisper something in a language Evony didn't understand, then fluttered away shyly.

She landed again on top of a large desktop set on a raised dais in the center of the room. It was cluttered several feet high with literature of all kinds; Maps, scrolls, books, even posters for events long since past. A globe perched precariously atop a set of encyclopedias handwritten in no less than twelve languages, in a flowing script, and in gold ink, no less.

Behind it all, in a simple wooden chair sat a strange Elven being dressed in white robes of a scholar. He wore a cape made of owl feathers and his silver hair hung to the floor, braided with opal and other white stones. He, like Tyldoré, also had long finger nails. His hands were otherwise devoid of information. He was orating a poem, seemingly of his own creation, to a strange scribe.

The scribe was similarly dressed in white robes, but his head was that of an owl. A pair of wings were folded against his back. Evony would have laughed if their expressions weren't so solemn.

The pixie leaped over a mountain of ancient Gnomish cookbooks, hovered over to the Elf's ear and whispered. He turned, still as serious as ever, to Eri. He spoke in clear, perfectly enunciated Elvish. "Little one, what is it you wish to know?"

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri gulped a bit and bowed lowly. "Forgive our interruption, Master Writer, but we are to set out on a quest to defeat a beast called a Hydra and wish to prepare by learning about the beast." She told him politely and humbly.

"A curious request." The Master Writer stood and extended his hands outward. "And pray tell, dost thou have payment for mine services? Any bit of knowledge I could add to my colection?"

Evony stepped forward. "I've this invitation to the palace. Will that do?" She held up her scroll.

The Master Writer waved his hand and the scroll floated over to him and hovered in front of his face. It unrolled itself and he read it quickly. "This will do."

The owlheaded scribe took it from the air with two hands and carefully placed in a chest. "Follow me." He said simply in a dignified, if not pompous tone.

If Evony weren't so enthralled by her surroundings, she would have walked quicker. As it was, she stopped every few steps to inspect the myriad of arifacts that filled every alcove along the hallway. Statues of Elvish nobles; scrolls that looked older than the Silver Tree itself; Some coins from different nations and races; a few trophies, taxidermy monster heads and some foreign weapons. What caught Evony's attention most, however, was a wall made entirely of glass. Behind it, an ocean's worth of exotic fish from all over the world, of all colors, shapes, and sizes, swam between the colorful reefs. "Wow... It's beautiful."

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri smiled a bit but then frowned worriedly at Evony for being slow. "Come on before he gets angry." She whispered fearfully and went back to hurrying along after the man leading them. She didn't want to be scolded and punished for wasting time.

Evony slowly turned away and followed. "Sorry. This is all just so fascinating." She tried to keep her eyes ahead of her. Shortly, the Scribe led them to a door. It was heavy and made of metal. "You'll find everything you need in here. Ring this bell if you need my assistance. He handed a tiny silver bell to Eri. Then he disappeared into thin air with a golden cloud of smoke. "Well. Okay, then." Evony whispered in awe. "Let's go in." She pushed open the door.

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri held the bell close and helped open the heavy door. Once they were on the other side of it her eyes widened in amazement. "I've never been in this room before..." She murmured softly and looked around.

"I find it hard to believe that anyone could have been to all of the rooms in here." Evony said looking around. The door behind them closed with a metallic latching sound and disappeared.

Around them, several tanks and cages lined the walls full of exotic animals, most of which Evony didn't even recognize. A three eyed lizard with feathers clung to the glass in one terrarium. Next to it, in a small glass ball the size of Evony's head, a grayish cube of gelatinous substance oozed around, leaving a trail of its own slime. In a cage across the room, a furry mass sat with its back to her. It must've been about 7 feet tall.

Out of curiosity, she began to walk toward it and nearly tripped over a large bone. It skittered across the room and before Evony could regain her balance, a small dog ran after it, tongue lolling, fur in its face. It slid to a stop and laid next to the bone. "Hello there."

Startled, Evony looked around for the source of the voice, then realized it must be the dog. She was too stunned to say anything.

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri's eyes widened as she looked down at the small dog, having just seen the encounter. "D-did the dog just.... Speak?" She asked, her voice squeaking a bit at the end when she said speak. She was stunned but also couldn't deny the dog was very adorable. Though, it probably wasn't the best time to be thinking about that.

"Yes. I did." The dog's mouth didn't move, but Evony heard the voice in her mind. It was a droopy, elderly voice, kind and gentle, and with an air of wisdom and grace." His mustache twitched as he sniffed. "What brings you here?"

message 18: by ~Fangirl~ (new)

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri's eyes widened more and she looked even paler than usual, if that was at all possible. "W-we're l-looking for information on H-Hydras...." Eri managed in a terrified voice.

The little dog sniffed again and then sneezed. "Hydras... hydras... hydras? Hmm..." He muttered to himself. "Nasty creatures. Aquatic. Very poisonous. Also acidic. So many heads." He stood and stretched, arching his back and letting loose a wide yawn. "If you'll excuse me for a moment, I'm going to change into something a little more comfortable. Eh. You may want to turn away." He waved a paw in Evony's and Eri's direction. Evony raised an eyebrow but did as he suggested.

((Hello. Sorry for not being on in forever.))
Evony watched a rainbow light dance across the wall opposite the dog, then saw an Elf-like shadow stand up and stretch in the middle of it. "Now," came the voice behind her. "Where did I put my robe?" She heard footsteps walk around a bit. Her face turned beet red when they stopped near her, then continued. "Ah. There it is." A few awkward seconds later, he gave them the signal that it was clear to turn around now.

Evony did so slowly. In the dog's place was an Elvish man who looked just like the dog- a droopy mustache, sagging jowls, and a shock of shaggy gray hair in his weathered face. He was dressed in a plain brown robe tied with a rope belt. "Come, let us do some research." He gestured them toward a large desk hidden in an alcove in the wall. Evony was sure she would have seen it earlier and realized it must have materialized at the man's convenience.

"The more I get used to this place, the more it surprises me." As she finished the thought, another thought popped into her head, totally unrelated to the first. "Uh. Excuse me, Sir? What do we call you?"

"Jasper would be the human equivalent, I think. I'm afraid the Were-speech might be too guttural for your throats."

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri's eyes widened and she blushed a bit but didn't question what was happening. Once they were able to turn around, she walked with Evony, following after the elf.

"You're a shifter." Eri said softly, her eyes wide. She'd heard legends of a race that could shift their form at will. She thought they were all extinct!

"No. I'm afraid our population has dwindled significantly, but accounts of our deaths have been... greatly exaggerated." Jasper's mustache twitched and he sneezed. "Ah. Excuse me."

Jasper moved to stand by the desk and ran his hand across the surface. The wood was of an ancient softwood that Evony didn't recognize. It had a deep crimson-brown tint, almost blood red, and the grain was as dark as ink. A single, polished sheet of silver- a mirror- was built into a backboard and surrounded by small cubbyholes filled with many strange trinkets.

He let his hand drop down to a series of drawers. The handles were polished silver and shaped like roses. Bits of ruby were embedded in each petal and emerald in the leaves.

"That looks insanely expensive." Evony gasped. She looked at Eri. Jasper smiled. "Very. It was a gift from my father." He opened a drawer and pulled out a green, leather bound book with gold clasps. A deep purple strip of cloth, that served as a bookmark, hung out with a gold monocle attached. "Let's see. Hydras. H,H,H..." He began flipping through the gold leafed pages. Evony caught a glimpse of a few brightly colored illustrations. "Oh, my. It has pictures? How..."

"Wood cuts and ink, my dear." Jasper said still flipping. "H-Y, H-Y, H-Y..."

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri's eyes widened and she grinned, hurrying over and looking over his shoulder, looking intently at the pictures. "This is incredible...." She said softly and sighed.

'I could live in this chamber forever if I were allowed.' She thought happily and sighed contently, smiling dreamily.

"Ah. Here it is." Jasper showed them a picture of a beast with three heads and sharp fangs. Its bright red tongue seemed to lash around wildly like a flame. Its scales were a deep emerald green and its eyes bright as the sun. "Terrible beastie, this." He sniffed. "Says here, they usually prefer swamplands. They also have an annoying habit of not staying dead. Can't just cut off its head. Mmm. Pardon the rhyme. They are very also very venomous. And their scales are like iron. You need to burn a mixture of its own venom and the mucus of a Sapphirean Hagfish and coat the residue on a sword made of imperial Elvish Silver."

Evony took a step back, stunned. "I'm sorry. WHAT?"

"Yeah." Jasper shrugged. "Says there. This was written by Muriel the Compassionate and Darune the Wise themselves. I do so hope I've been of service." He smiled.

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri sighed softly. "You have been, thank you very much. But now it seems our quest has only become even harder and more impossible. I mean, Hydra Venom? Sapphirean Hagfish mucus? Not to mention a sword of pure imperial Elvish silver. They won't just give us that. Only elves of the highest ranking carry those." She said softly and hopelessly.

Jasper waved to the pair of elves and shuffled them to the door. "Alright, bye now! I've lot's of work to do! Farewell!"

Evony shrugged. "Okay... so that happened. I guess we're going to the beach." She joked, hiding the fact that the prospect of finding Hagfish did not sit well with her at all.

Evony looked around too and found an ornate handle made of crystal that hadn't been there before. She turned it and the door swung open. The next room was made entirely of clear crystal. Furniture, walls, and ceilings. The floor was decorated with thousands of tiny fractal patterns. A soft blue light seemed to shine from within them. Suddenly, a wooden door appeared in front of them and the one behind them closed and disappeared. The lights brightened and a single thought pierced into Evony's mind. "They're so pretty. I need one." She walked over and plucked a crystal apple from a crystal fruit tray on a crystal table.

((I feel this post may be dangerously close to playing your character, but I don't know how else to do it.))
As Eri grabbed Evony's wrist, a similar urge flooded her brain. Visions of her life as a servant flashed before her. She heard promises that she would never go hungry again. Images of herself living a life of wealth. She had her own servants to obey her every whim. A distant voice coaxed her, seemingly from within her own conscience, to take a crystal and make a life for herself.

~Fangirl~ (fangirl1231) | 41 comments Eri's eyes widened at the voices and the urging, a part of her wanted to do it. She began to relax before she realized what was happening. "NO!" She cried, letting go of Evony's wrist to grab the crystal fruit and hurl it away from them. She breathed heavily before looking to Evony. "Don't. Touch. Anything." She said firmly, not acting for like a servant for the first time in a very long time.
