Andrew Finazzo (johnyqd) | 343 comments I don't believe I've read anything by Joe Hill before. My first impression is that this may be similar to a once favorite book of mine (The Stand - which has aged poorly and is no longer a favorite). I love post apocalyptic settings and savor a story that documents the initial outbreak.

What an unfortunate set of covers. From left to right: mediocre, we get it... flames, birds?!?, and "maybe someone will think this is a Hunger Games book".

A very nice, simple dedication which also ties into the theme of fire - bravo.

Potter to Poppins to Bradbury and a clear twist of horror?!? I'm intrigued by this inspiration list and it would be fun if more books did the same.

Stephen King consistently uses Springsteen Lyrics in his novels and often in his epigraphs. I like the commitment Hill is showing to these same people and themes - I hope that clarity and focus continues through the story.

Off we go!

Michelle Finazzo | 281 comments I wasn't aware until after starting the book who the author and his famous father were. The inspiration page which I had a bit of distaste for initially made more sense after knowing about the author's lineage.

I have the cover listed on the very left. I think my favorite is the cover on the far right.

This book is from Andrew's to-read list and I had not heard of it in advance. I have very little, if any, preconceived notions about what this novel will be like. I read a brief synopsis that declared this a post-apocalyptic setting in which an infection of some sort causes people to spontaneously combust.
