Cuniculture - conejo - rabbit in Spanish ... Must be some latin roots, great word.

Hugh (bodachliath) this is a longer version of the list of words I looked up (in some cases unsuccessfully) while reading Hopscotch: antinomy, aulic, auscultation, cadastral, catoblepas, chitterling, chryselephantine, cinerary, coenaesthesis, columbarium, coprolite, cuniculture, cuspidation, echolalia, eclogue, elution, epistomology, epithelial, exordium, extravasation, geometrid, gnoseologist, helicoid, incunabula, macaronic, mana, mantic, mnemotechny, nebiole, nephelibate, obolus, oneiromancy, palmiped, promissoration, propedeutic, rotogravure, ruleman, satori, serape, soteriology, stupa, teleleological, tragacanth, trismegistic

Mark André Impressive list! Maybe I recognize four: epistemology, stupa, teleological, trismegistic.

Haaze | 0 comments Ah, that is a list to get lost in Hugh. It makes me want to read Hopscotch at the same time as I want to run in the opposite direction as fast as I can. So is this the translator having a good time or is actually Cortázar's voice? Seeing these words I have a feeling of that Cortázar's writing is an extreme challenge, Almost every time I read a translation I sense that I am on the other side of a window. The glass shields/blocks me from the true appreciation of the original.

Lovely phrases Mark! :)
The last one sounds like something written by Thomas Hardy. He often mulls on nature and the night sky itself....

Mark André This one is fairly famous:

"The heaventree of stars hung with humid nightblue fruit." pg. 651

Same word my old professor used to describe Ulysses.
"A very rich work."

I have such a big list from Charlotte Brontee - she is a wizzard with vocabulary (a bit like Joyce). I'll post a list later on this week.
She's got a very bad opinion of the French sadly in her book (made me laugh a lot!) - but her French is impeccable of course.:D
