This is my updated challenge list (I've also made some changes based on xmas gifts!):

1. Historical Fiction - Imperium: A Novel ..."</i>

I loved [book:The Secret Garden
and The Passage
Margo I love the idea of doing 2 for each genre I'll try but I don't think I'll be able to go it for all genres but we'll see :)

Trelawn Great choices for historical fiction and biography Margo

message 253: by Paul (new)

Paul Great mix Margo. Some books I loved in there. Imperium, Boy, Vlad are all books I would highly recommend. Colour ointerestin an interesting one. You'll probably have to read Light Fantastic pretty soon after as well as the two pretty much run together

message 254: by Myra (new)

Myra (myrajoyce) For Autobiography/Biography I'd like to suggest Dancer by Colum McCann. It's about Rudolf Nureyev. I love anything that Colum McCann writes. He could write a shopping list and I would probably give it 5 stars.

message 255: by Margo (new)

Margo Colleen someone else came up with the idea, I can't remember who! These are all books I'd be reading anyway so it's not really any hardship ;-)

Paul, I haven't read The Colour of Magic in 25 years! God knows what I'll make of it now.

Trelawn, I'm particularly looking forward to historical fiction.

message 256: by Paul (new)

Paul I love discworld and I'm fond of Colour of Magic but find it a lot weaker and less complex than the later stuff.
Your Historical fiction choices are worth being excited about ;-)

message 257: by Margo (new)

Margo I'm pretty excited about the entire challenge Paul ;-D

message 258: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn Yeah Hardy is definitely a challenge!!

message 259: by Margo (new)

Margo Emma wrote: "I love The Secret Garden. It's one of my favourite books from childhood. Hardy and me on the other hand have issues."

I'm actually not sure that I've read anything by Hardy. I feel that I must have but I can't remember the specifics lol

Paul, if I don't get on with a book is it acceptable to switch to another book within the same category?

message 260: by Paul (new)

Paul Of course Margo. The challenge is about trying new things and they won't all work out .

Margo Paul wrote: "Of course Margo. The challenge is about trying new things and they won't all work out ."

Good news ;-)

Bookworm with Kids Emma, I am probably doing something wrong but when I click on the link for the tracker, it just brings me to the overall yearly tracker. Do I need to be on a computer to set up the Genre Challenge tracker? Thanks for your help.

Emma, I used the second link and succeeded in setting up a challenge shelf. I called it GRI challenge.

I may read books out of sync with the group, but I hope to read 1 book for each genre.

Bookworm with Kids Thanks a million, Emma! I figured that I might need to be using the browser instead of the app.

message 266: by Myra (new)

Myra (myrajoyce) Question: A lot of people are listing the books they will read in each genre for the challenge . Do I need to do that or can I just make my selections as the genre comes up? (1st time doing this so I might be full of questions.)

message 267: by Paul (new)

Paul You can pick when each genre is coming up. Whatever works for you Myra

Thanks Paul.

message 269: by Margo (new)

Margo I just listed mine for reference Myra. I'm trying to use books I already own and chip away a bit at my baklog =]

message 270: by Margo (new)

Margo And then emma put up the link to the challenges shelf -

Ah, thanks Margo.

message 272: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I just finished Pint-Sized Ireland: In Search of the Perfect Guinness and enjoyed it immensely. I wish I had travelled more when I was younger. I could have done a year out of college and gone on the road. It would have done me a world of good. I was an experienced traveler too. I had been to all 50 states by the time I graduated college and spent three summers in Washington D.C., two working for one of our Senators and one in summer school at George Washington University. I just didn't travel to Europe until I was in my 40's. That was a bad mistake.

message 273: by Paul (new)

Paul It will start the second week of February . 6 weeks per genre . I will announce the genre in a few days to give people time to prepare

message 274: by Andy (new)

Andy :) haven't started the first one yet! Finally acquired the book & picking it up today so hopefully start later in the week.

message 275: by Paul (new)

Paul You still have 4 weeks so no worries :-)

Bookworm with Kids Andy, I haven't started mine either so you aren't alone!

message 277: by Andy (new)

Andy :) Always late on parade is me! At least Ive got it now, jus gotta finish all my other books queued up, mind as its a travel book perhaps i'll read bits n pieces over the next 4 weeks.

I have read two books, one of which is a mystery. I'm counting it towards my GRI challenge. I hope that is ok.

Paul Time to announce the second genre -
We will be commencing Historical Fiction on the 13th February , again running for 6 weeks. Looking forward to seeing peoples choices.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments MMh still thinking The House Where it Happened The House Where it Happened by Martina Devlin for this one. Set in 1711 based on one of Ireland's last witch trials, I believe.

message 281: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I am hearing amazing things about Illuminae , both the audio and the written versions. It may be my second selection when Sci Fi comes up.

message 282: by Donna (new)

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments My pick for Historical Fiction is The German Girl.

message 283: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments Donna wrote: "My pick for Historical Fiction is The German Girl."

I have that one too ! This is pretty much my favorite genre the hard part is picking which to read :)

message 284: by Donna (new)

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Colleen, I just typed "good historical fiction books" into my browser and this one came up first. I thought it sounded interesting and WWII is one of my favourite times to read about.

message 285: by Paul (new)

Paul I think i'm finding it harder to pick for the genres I am more familiar with. I want to do something different for them . Historical fiction is going to be interesting to see how people approach a genre a lot of us read regularly anyway

message 286: by Thomas, Moderator (new)

message 287: by Donna (new)

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Thomas that one is on my tbr list, it sounds very good!

Thomas (tom471) | 1966 comments Mod
I have only read 5%, but I am enjoying it.

message 289: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments I like historical fiction. It has a great range. From medieval to a few decades ago. It will be fun to see the choices.

message 290: by Paul (new)

Paul Its such a wide genre so lots of choice anyway.

message 291: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn Right I have picked a new author for the historical fiction challenge, Andrew Taylor. Pick ordered and should be here in a week or so. Bleeding Heart Square https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

message 292: by Paul (new)

Paul I'll stick with CJ Sansom Dissolution for this one.
Its been recommended numerous times on Goodreads to me so time for a punt

Dissolution is also on my tbr list. I went to the library today and could not get it so got book 2 in the series, Dark Fire

message 294: by Paul (new)

Paul I don't read a lot of crime books so it will be a bit of a new turn for me anyway .

message 295: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I love the CJ Sansom series. I first heard of him from Craig Ferguson and thank him tremendously.

Dissolution is a great read Paul, surprised you haven't read it - finally a book I got to before you lol. Definite emphasis on history but the crime element it good too.

Taylor is an interesting writer Trelawn. I'll be interested to hear about that one :-)

Bookworm with Kids Thomas, I would caution you not to make your mind up on the Shardlake series on Dark Fire. I felt it wasn't the best in the series by a good mile, Dissolution is far better. Heartstone is also not the strongest that CJ Sansom has written. Lamentation is also excellent.

message 299: by Thomas, Moderator (new)

Thomas (tom471) | 1966 comments Mod
Can I read them out of order? The library had two others in the series.

Bookworm with Kids I'm not the best person to answer that, Thomas. I am a bit OCD when it comes to reading series of books in order! Perhaps another Sansom enthusiast can advise. ...
