Dexys/Dexys Midnight Runners
Yes indeed. Very enjoyable it is too. Bonkers. But in a good way. Quite possibly the strictest dress code of all time to get on set.
Did I ever tell about the time I caused Kevin Rowland to storm out of a venue we were both in?
If so, apologies, if not....
We were chatting about this and that, at a Northern Soul event in Hove c2005, and I mentioned something about his "heyday" referring to the Too Rye Aye era. He didn't like it. Not at all, He said to me "this is my fuckin heyday" and then turned on his heels and walked straight out of the venue. And that was that. The end of a beautiful friendship.

Something tells me you are 100% correct Mark.
Hot tip: when meeting a pop star always assume that their best work and greatest triumphs still await them
Still, fairplay to Kevin, he has indeed pulled off an unlikely triumphant return with this latest Dexys incarnation. "Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul" is no "One Day I'm Going to Soar", but is still very enjoyable and will probably emerge as one of my favourite albums of 2016.

I reckon if you can't fault a middle-aged feller for thinking his best work and greatest triumph lie ahead of him, then nor can you fault him for buying his dungarees eight inches too long in length in the belief that he's gonna grow taller in a few years' time.
For no obvious reason I have been enthusiastically enjoying....

Wonderful news David. Mark mentioned this new album too. Great to see a bit more detail and the news of the shows.
Thank you kindly

I’m comfortable saying that it’s his best yet, which should be taken as very high praise indeed. An absolute masterpiece.

This is wonderful news Mark
I can't wait to get my first listen. Did you Pledge for it? Or was it one of your myriad industry contacts who procured you a copy?

Great planning - bravo Sir
In related news, I'm going to the Cotswolds in August and have somehow coincided it with a trip to see Forest Green Rovers vs Oldham

It was The Great Man Himself who sent me a private listening link. I must have listened through the entire album seven or eight times already -- it’s that good!

Arrived today. Along with a lovely note from Pete thanking me for my ongoing support.
I'll report back once I've immersed myself in it

As someone domiciled in the north of Scotland, I have to say that Caledonia is my earworm, but the level of quality is exemplary throughout.
I'm certainly digging the eclecticism - I was particularly struck by the neo-psych vibe of Paradise which is magnificent. It helps that I am a sucker for whistling in songs given the last minute or so has a bit of Pete (presumably) doing that very thing.
That is followed by the pared back Fondly somehow makes it even better. A great vehicle for his husky, world weary voice.

Kevin Rowland's My Beauty is getting a rerelease...
Originally released in 1999, “My Beauty” was the second solo album from Dexys/Dexys Midnight Runners’ lead singer Kevin Rowland. The album was mostly unfairly received by critics at the time, but in the years since has come to enjoy cult status. This reissue is the first time “My Beauty” has been available on vinyl and on CD with its originally intended track-listing.

Not a bad release, given that it’s a covers album. Our Kev was in fine form vocally, if not sartorially. Interesting to see that Cherry Red is finally starting to issue releases on vinyl.
The times they are a-changin’ [back to how they were twenty five years ago].

I know that both formats have been remastered, so it’ll probably be necessary to buy a third CD copy to get Kevin’s always-informative sleeve notes.
Further Burgess Twitter listens/discussions for Too Rye-Ay and Don’t Stand Me Down, apparently. Good times.
I've not engaged with any of the Tim Burgess Twitter listens but I probably should give it a try. They sound fun
I too like My Beauty - some well executed and heartfelt versions. Not sure I'm a big enough fan to buy another version but, that said, when David reports back that it's an audio miracle I'll likely dive in

Why, just why?
Concrete and Clay by Unit 4 + 2 was one of the first records I bought.
I would genuinely like to know what was going on though.
I expect David or Mark might be able to explain Kevin's decision to transform his look for My Beauty.
I doubt anyone can explain away that video though, which is so full of missteps and distasteful imagery.
Put Kevin's version of Concrete and Clay up against the Unit 4+2 version and it's no contest.
Talking of which I came across a video of them filmed performing it on the construction site of the Barbican in London in 1965. Pathé Pictorial uses the setting as a literal interpretation of the song during the building works.
Now this one is well worth a watch and is memorable for all the right reasons...

Simpler times eh?
A bunch of clean cut lads in a wholesome video :-)

Looking on the bright side, I think we can all agree how thankful we are that it was posted as 240p and not high definition.

Kevin explained his reasoning (I do suspect impact-seeking though) for ‘men’s dresses’) and whilst I firmly remain raimented in 1973 Rory Gallagher paper boy garb, I do understand that they have been taken up by more fashonable people than me. Yeah, right.
I was never a fan of Concrete and Clay, even in my impressionable mid-60s pop hunger. Dexys’ fans do opine that Kev covered it as a tribute to the rhythm of the song which found its way into the 1982 big hit.
Bowie was rocking Mr Fish dresses for men back in 1969

I have to confess that I really like Concrete and Clay. I been singing it in the shower of late. Good point about the rhythm David, I'd never noticed that before but it's unmistakable now you mention it.
Were the versions of the tunes on your cassette, the same that found their way onto the album? Or were they demos or alternative versions?
Kevin's version of The Greatest Love Of All gets me every time

*not necessarily my opinion

It had become “just leave a message”, and has thus remained in its live performance.
Fully in keeping with the manifesto-like peroration to ‘The Waltz’ on that tour, “You may notice that some of the songs we play tonight are a bit different to how you remember them. That’s because we’ve changed them. The way we look at it is this...the whole world has changed, so why shouldn’t we? Why SHOULDN’T we?”
Cue for adoring rapture from the Strong Devoted.
