For many years I ushered for a major - well, high in the second tier - symphony orchestra. I would work inside for all the best shows.
I love the experience of live performance.

That is such a cool job, Mark! Lucky!! You must have had so many great experiences listening to these performances. I wish I had a job like that in college, but I was not a classical music maniac (yet).

Sometimes it seems like the conductor is just hanging out waving his arms now and then, but your experience proves otherwise. I have heard stories that some of the more famous conductor were terrifying. Perhaps it is a love-hate relationship between the members of the orchestra and the conductor?

It's entertaining to watch the arm movements of Fritz Reiner conducting the CSO in this excerpt from Beethoven's 7th symphony. The first minute in particular! :)
