Bianca Hello, I'm Bianca. Last year I did pikes peak, but I bought so many books that I will go for a bigger mountain this time. In 2016 I read 156 books but only twelve from my own collection. so I'm a little embarrassed now... Not sure wich mountain I'm going to choose yet.

message 152: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 35 comments Good luck Bianca! I think you can always start at the bottom mountain and work your way on up, see how far you get that way.

In other news, I just finished my second TBR book of the year. If I hadn't bought 14 books already this year I'd be shiny XD

message 153: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 126 comments I've only purchased two so far this year! Probably because I've spent my money on other stuff, but still.

message 154: by Kiki (new)

Kiki | 17 comments Hi everyone! So I failed miserably in 2016 only reading about 20 of the 36 books from my TBR I wanted so I need to improve my climbing skills. So far I already bought 5 books this year which makes me desperately wanting to accomplish this challenge this year!
Happy climbing to everyone!

Catherine | 126 comments I have a question, and hopefully it's okay to post this here.

I signed up for Mt. Kilimanjaro (60 books). Based on what I have planned for the rest of the year, I think I'll end up finishing Mt. Toro (75 books).

Should I just go ahead and work on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and if/when I finish, start a new discussion thread in the Mt. Toro folder?

Debbie M | 17 comments My name is Deb W and this is my 1st time doing this challenge, I'm going to try Pike's Peak. Is there somewhere else I am supposed to add that info, or just in this post?

Yes ;D

You can always move up to the next level when you've finished Mt Kilimanjaro. Plus it gives one such a feeling of accomplishment.

Good luck with your climb.

You start a new thread of your own in the pike's peak forum if you haven't already, but this thread is the declaration of intent thread I think. Good luck!

message 160: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (tahitisunshine3) | 4 comments I will tackle this challenge. I unfortunately don't have ranges with ranges beyond them. I am an avid library user and prefer to only have books in my home that I want to reread. I have a mix of books I got as gifts last year and scores of ebooks that I've downloaded over the years because they are free! I will probably be able to cobble together a 12 book mountain.

message 161: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 126 comments Don't apologize for having willpower, Gretchen!! :)

message 162: by Pam (new)

Pam Lauman | 12 comments Hi all. I am Pam and this will be my second year. I really enjoyed the accountability of this group. Last year I read 58 books while selling, buying, and moving so I hope to attain Mt. Kilimanjaro this year. Good luck to all!

Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review) (knyttwytch) Hi I'm Hilary and I just found this group (and by 'eck I need it!), I am going full out for Mount Olympus (eeeps!)

Hilary--Welcome and thanks for joining me on Olympus! I'm determined to plant that flag this year.

You and me both! I have 450+ books on my GoodReads TBR shelf (looks sheepish)

Lynne | 2 comments Hi, I'm Lynne and I have TBR books in 7 bookcases in the apartment and 36 boxes of unread books in a storage unit that I have rented. I'm starting small and shooting for a stroll up Mt. Vancouver.

If you're looking sheepish, then I'm looking like a whole flock...I've got about 1500 TBR books. :-)

Hi Lynne! Welcome to Book-a-holics R Us....er, I mean Mount TBR. :-) Sounds like you've got the kind of TBR mount range I've got going on here in my house. Good luck with your climb!

Michelle | 2 comments Hi! My name is Michelle and I learned about this challenge through Litsy. This challenge is right up my alley as I have a huge mountain of tbr's that I would like to get read. This is the first group I've joined on goodreads and my first group challenge so I'm going to start small with Pike's Peak.

Welcome! What kind of nursing? I worked in L&D but am in an office setting, now.

message 176: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 35 comments So far this year I've read 19 books, 13 of which I've had longer than 27 days XD

I've had most of them longer than that, in fact. Although they do seem to be my more recent purchases rather than, y'know, the older ones.

The other 6 books were library books, because TBR isn't my only challenge this year and if I bought books for every challenge I'm trying I'd go broke. A lot of my TBRs do fit in other challenges, luckily, so much so that I might make the jump from El Toro up to Everest or even Olympus... We'll see.

Of course so far this year I've also bought... 54 books already? Dang. Cheap e-books will be the undoing of me, I'm sure of it. I'd say it's ammo for next year's hike, but chances are I'll read half of these before I read books I've had for ages.

message 177: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 126 comments I created a shelf last year for books I purchased and it was over 200 books. Just in one year. Which of course is more than I even read last year. So this year I'm trying something new, I'm keeping a list of how much I spend on books each month. So far I have only bought nine books (and one of them was almost free because I had a gift card). I'm hoping this helps me curb my spending and helps me get my TBR shelf to under 1,000. (!!!!!)

message 178: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 35 comments Well, I got £10 off today's haul because I have a loyalty card. But I really do need to cut back on book buying... need to find a different route from the bank back to the bus stop I think!

message 179: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 126 comments I had to quit getting daily Book Bub e-mails. A lot of the books I was getting were free or super cheap (99 cents or $1.99) but I was accumulating SO many e-books. At the rate I'm going, I won't live long enough to finish all the books I have, let alone all the ones I will buy in the future!

I am in the same situation! I changed Book Bub from daily to weekly. It's easier to resist now and I may unsubscribe all together. Now GR is sending me email deals! Many of those are books already on my shelves so those are easier to resist.

message 181: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 126 comments I still get weekly Book Bub e-mails too, but you are right, it's a lot easier to resist now. I buy a lot of cozy mystery books, which are often on sale for the Kindle, but I'm trying hard not to buy any that are from a series I'm not caught up on. I own so many that I haven't even read yet!

message 182: by Angela (new)

Angela Johnson (aaangelaaa) Hello! I'm Angela :) I think I may be past the cut off to officially join but I'm still going to do the challenge on my own. I've been meaning to tackle the books I currently own and am modestly aiming for 48 (Mt. Ararat) but would love to climb even higher. For any other reading challenge I'm doing I've tried to only use books I own, unless I don't have one that fits the category and then I'll do a library book so I don't fall deeper into the books-I-own-and-haven't-read blackhole. Good luck everyone!

I don't think you are past the cut off. I joined in February last year.

✩Anna✩ (annanna) Hi everyone! I've recently stumbled upon this group after logging all of my unread books I own in a spreadsheet, and it feels like the perfect time to take on this challenge. I'm going to start with Mt. Vancouver and (hopefully) work my way up from there.

Catherine...I hear you. I bought 313 books last year--according to my Goodreads shelf. Only read 160 (total--and not all were mine...). It's a never-ending struggle--I just can't resist a good used book sale (Friends of the Library and Hoosier Hills Community Book Fair, I looking at you....).

The really weird thing is, I think I used the library more last year than I ever have in any years past. So I got a lot of reading done, but not nearly as many of my own books as I wanted to. So far this year, I'm doing a lot better!

message 190: by Steven (new)

Steven (wyldemusick) | 220 comments Hi, I'm Steven, though in most of my life I go by David (and my music is under David Alexander McDonald.) I'm on Goodreads as Steven E. McDonald because well, that's my byline as a writer (and my legal name.)

I've loved books since I was knee high to a grasshopper, and was reading before I started school (and sucking up science books by the time I was ten, including texts on nuclear physics.)

My annual ambition is to make it up Mount Olympus, which I sometimes do well in time, and mostly manage to do at the last second (as I did last year.) This year I'll likely be skiing down the other side by June, given how much I've clocked thus far this year (I've been resolutely avoiding recent purchases and library books.)

I started doing Mount TBR a few years ago, despite the conniptions with my eyes (which meant that I couldn't get a prescription for new glasses, as my eyes weren't settled enough) as a challenge to myself to tackle the ever-growing library.

And it *is* a library. My apartment walls are lined with bookshelves, and those are stuffed with books of all kinds, and my coffee table (a repurposed cable reel) is a book carousel. My bedroom is equally as stuffed, and there are bags and boxes of books tucked into the very large closet. I have also given in to the lure of digital, with my two main devices at the moment being an iPad Air (very useful for the graphic novel collection) and a Kindle Touch.

I'm forcing myself to slow the pace of book purchases, though. I would like to make a dent in the thousands I already own.

message 191: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 35 comments Good luck with slowing down on purchases, Steven! Let me know if you figure out how, I could use some tips. At least my most recent purchases were charity shop books...

message 192: by Karen (new)

Karen | 66 comments Hi

My name is Karen and I am an addict. There, I have said it. My new(ish) home is so close to a road full of charity shops...and Waterstones and other book shops are not that far away.

I have about 800 books in my TBR split fairly evenly between Kindle and print format...but I prefer the latter. It shows. I used to have a floor in my flat.

Anyway, I hope to read 60 by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

Good luck to everyone with their challenges.
