The story begins with a boy named Max and his new monster suit. Max’s monster suit inspires him to act out like a wild thing, scaring the dog and telling his mother he will “eat her up!” which causes him to get sent to bed with no dinner. As the night continues, his room gradually grows into a forest, and a boats to a new world where the wild things are. When he arrives, the monster roars, and gnashed their teeth at the boy. Immediately the boy sets his dominance and yells, “BE STILL” to all the monsters, and crowned himself the wild thing king. The next couple pages are filled with color art visually portraying Max’s celebration with the wild things. Not too long after being king, Max realized he was lonely and wanted to only be home with his mom and people who love him. He realized they way he acted wasn’t how you should treat people you care about and immediately regrets his decision to be king. So he leaves, the but monsters aren’t happy about that and try everything to get him to stay. They roar, gnash their teeth and even threaten to eat him up! He traveled for years and weeks through the ocean, until he finally arrived home while his supper waiting for him still warm.
