David | 1065 comments Yes, a lot to ponder there.

I’ve read quite a few wartime and immediate post-war spy thriller-type tomes, as well as several Cold War DDR yarns, so I’ll investigate synopses of each of the books mentioned in The Guardian, and write ANOTHER list which I will promptly mislay.

David | 1065 comments I should have mentioned that I read and enjoyed hugely Maxim Leo’s Red Love: The Story Of An East German Family (factual rather than fictional as I recall) in 2015, where the DDR’s unease is examined, leaving the conclusion that the suspicion and near-paranoia in the DDR, especially in East Berlin, were mirror images of the US’s mid-50s McCarthyism.
