OK - I've finished reading the book and I'm impressed by the practicality of the advice!

As a human resources manager I was very pleased to find that this book talks about the most important aspects of manging people! Steven suggests that managers trust employees and give them responsibility, while keeping them accountable - in my view a vital part of good management.

As many will have experienced, managers are often appointed because of their technical or subject expertise with little or no advice about how to pick, motivate and manage the best staff. This is the book for those people in my opinion.

Although the book briefly touches on the well known 'classic management theory', the true strength is in the practical application - as the title Managing for Success: Practical Advice for Managers suggests.

Interested to hear what other have to say!

Steven Smith (srsmith2014) | 14 comments Hey Dominic. Do you ever get the impression that very few people are reading these messages? There are 220 members in this management and leadership group but I'm wondering if most are asleep. Hope this will wake some up.

Yes - I'm trying to encourage participation in the group to make it more active. As you would know, prior to becoming moderator (in April 2014) the last post was in 2013... so we already have more participation and we'll keep building!

Steven Smith (srsmith2014) | 14 comments I see that 30 people have downloaded my book for free. I would really like to see some honest reviews, it looks as if the discussion is not going anywhere.

I am disappointed that there have been no responses to Steven's reasonable post.

If we are to develop as a group, we must be prepared to read. Here we have the perfect opportunity to grow as a group and where the author has kindly given us the opportunity to review his book at no cost to us.

No future authors in the Leadership and Management area will bother with this group, let alone providing free copies, if we are not prepared to read and provide honest reviews.

Prove that we care in the next 48 hours!!!

Dave Lohman (techdave) | 2 comments You woke me up! I also realize that I have to limit my groups to a more practical number. Steve, I will read and review your book. Thank you for the free copy to review. I see it as a contract, you provide me the result of your months (or years) of effort and I am a obligated to provide you feedback. Hopefully the others who accepted your generosity will also reciprocate.

Leslie | 8 comments In my organization there are a lot of time wasters, or low value activities that waste time. For example, a few months ago, I had a micro manager, who knew very little but would tell the staff she knew more than us. Anyway she would require meetings to discuss a meeting that we were going to have. Once I invited her to a meeting and I gave a quick overview to her a week before. The morning of the meeting, there were only 5 of us in attendance, I gave another overview of the purpose of the meeting. She made a point to say to everyone that I blindsided her and should have told her what to expect. Basically this manager had no business in this role. She would waste hours of my day by making me sit in her office and go through in detail what i do, when i would send her reports or fill her in on a technology problem that I solved she would send an email to senior leadership explaining, my words that she made into her words, how she solved the problem, or change the format of my report to her own format and pass it off as work she did. Bottom line it was irritating to me. I get that I am there to support her but not at the expense of my sanity. In my experience this manager wasted a lot of my time, expected me to make her look good, but in the mean time she didn't nothing to help me grow. I forgot to mention that she insisted that I do work outside of my boundaries because she wanted it done. Legally i was not allowed to be doing this work. I work for the government so I am bound by legislative policy. I refused to do any work that would get me into trouble. After working for her for three months I left that division. A bad manager, especially to the degree of this one, can be mentally and emotionally draining. I spent a lot of time complaining, which could have made me look bad and jeopardize my integrity. I definitely appreciate reading this part of the book about time wasters, and working on things that you shouldn't.

Steven Smith (srsmith2014) | 14 comments I just posted two articles on Goodreads:

How to Truly Motivate Employees and
How to Create Jobs That Motivate

A major focus of my book, Managing for Success, is employee motivation. If you are interested in motivation, you may like these blogs and I encourage you to comment.
