Yasmin Yesterday I watched Known by God: An Interview with J I Packer on FaithlifeTV and two books he said were very influential in his life are Indwelling Sin and Mortification of Sin, both by John Owen.

I've wanted to read both of these for a while but, as wanting to read "all the books" is the bane of my life, I have yet to get to any of them!

Everywhere I look they say John Owen is quite hard to read but I'll be using Overcoming Sin & Temptation, edited by Kelly Kapic and Justin Taylor; the language is said to be updated. I'll also look up Owen's actual text, from time to time, to see how it compares with the modernized version.

Aside:
When asked, J I Packer gave the following book recommendations:

1. Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin
2. Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
3. Holiness by J C Ryle
4. The Lord of the Rings by J R R Tolkien
5. Indwelling Sin by John Owen
6. Mortification of Sin by John Owen

It would be great to complete them all!

Yasmin I've had some time to consider my approach to reading this work, and I've decided to go with my Logos resource (vol. 6 of the Works of John Owen) as first choice, and consult the edition edited by Kapic and Taylor, when necessary, for elucidation. Their outlines and glossary will definitely come in handy! This approach seems to work best for me presently.

Having read all the prefatory matter in the K&T edition, and Owen's preface to the reader, I'm now ready to start ... finally ;)
