Michelle | 52 comments Last night I finished The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls for task 4.15. I wasn't sure if this qualified as young adult or not (I saw it on some ya lists), but it's definitely a book that young people should read, especially when they're feeling bad about their parents...

Jennifer, I have been having a lot of fun and noticing some interesting similariries in the books I have been reading -- like the term "bullocks"!

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Completed:

1.25: the first 2 of The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix: Sabriel (491 pgs/paperback) and Lirael(487 pgs/hardback)

2.5 The Last Exit to Normal by Michael Harmon (my last name being Harris)
2.10 Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta, a Goodreads author and the winner of the Printz Award

Still having trouble with the author's first name same as someone in household, but working on it.

Highly recommend all of these books.

I'm in the same boat. Someone must be keeping their copy out way overdue, because I should have got it by now. I finally switched over to interlibrary loan, and it's in transit now.

Michelle | 52 comments For task 3.25 I read The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly (published in 2006) and The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron (winner 2007). While I liked The Higher Power of Lucky well enough, The Book of Lost Things was much more interesting and enjoyable. I'm not sure why one book won while the other wasn't even honored, but maybe it has something to do with the realistic nature of the winner? I'm not sure.

The Book of Lost Things is an adult fiction book, so it doesn't qualify for a Newbery. I'm assuming that's why it didn't win one.

Misty | 1505 comments Went reading crazy yesterday, read Savvy (342 pages, task 3.5) last night and immediately started The Hunger Games (374 pages, 1/2 of task 1.25) after finishing; read through until 7 this morning...Not sure why I'm up and functioning, think I'm probably headed back to bed (but lets be honest, if I go back to bed, it will be book in hand).

My review of Savvy will come after I've had enough sleep to write a coherent one, but little teaser: I gave it 5 stars.

Finally got some points!!

2.10 Wintergirls Anderson is a GR author, and a great one at that! She has yet to disappoint me! While I don't work with people with eating disorders, I do work with people with mental illnesses, and she definitely did her research for this one. She is so good at finding a "real" teen voice.

2.25 A-I Ozma of Oz by L. Frank Baum, J-Q Imani All Mine by Connie Porter, and R-Z The Bone Collector's Son by Paul Yee. These books were all OK for me. Probably my favorite was Imani All Mine, but even that wasn't as amazing as I had hoped.

Total: 35 points

Michelle | 52 comments More tasks finished:

3.5 - After the Rain, 1988 Honor Book...I have not read the 1988 winner, which is a book about Lincoln, so I'm unable to comment on it's status as an honor. It was worthy of notice for it's subject matter (dealing with dying grandparents).

3.20 - 1979 Winner: The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin and 1979 Honor: The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson...I liked both books and understood why there were considered for the award. I think I do agree with the ruling, because the Westing Game was a little more clever and original even if it was difficult for me to keep track of all the characters at times.
