David Kummer So, I'm taking my book My Abigail: A Psychological Thriller off of Kindle Select when the next enrollment period ends. I believe it is sometime in December.

I will update this thread as new things happen in this journey. Right now, the plan is to heavily promote it on sites such as Smashwords and Wattpad just as soon as it comes off of Kindle Select. I can also post pieces of it all across the web, which I could not before. But, since this is my last enrollment period, I'm taking advantage of all the things Select has to offer, like a 5-day free period which I'm doing around Halloween.

Feel free to share your own experiences or ask questions!

I think J.J. is a much bigger fan of Smash than of Amazon and shares his insight every once in a while...

David Kummer I've published one short story through Smashwords, and that process was pretty good. I like to have them both as my disposal, just to test all the waters.

Graeme Rodaughan It's a sound strategy that I am also considering.

I'm getting zero Kindle library reads.

David Kummer Really? I've found one thing that helps is hosting a free-book promotion. I don't know how it happens, but every time I host one my pages read jump up like crazy, and if you promote the giveaway while it's happening the affect is even more.

I earn about as much money from those pages read as I do from books sold!

Graeme Rodaughan I've done free promotions on Amazon and got 130 to 160 downloads each time, but Kindle Library reads are at zero.

I has some when I first published, but none in the last couple of months.

David Kummer That's weird... I don't know. If you aren't getting any, then I'd say drop KDP Select and move to Smashwords. If you aren't getting any library reads, then it's pointless.

Graeme Rodaughan I'm coming to that conclusion.

J.J. Mainor | 2440 comments Yeah, I did the free days in Select and got no attention. Right now I have one book perma free on Amazon, and its movement has been tepid compared to what I see on SW and even B&N.

SW has a lot of cool tools for selling on their site that Amazon won't give you, but if I had one criticism it would be that their store could use a revamp. I can't help but think it doesn't look like a professional seller when compared to Amazon, Apple, and B&N. Maybe it doesn't matter if you're pulling in sales from those they distribute to, but I wonder if they would do more direct sales if the store front looked a little more polished.

David Kummer That's a very good point, JJ, and one reason I was hesitant to use Smashwords.
