Paul Bowman | 3 comments The book starts off with the deaf girls father who has just returned from doing a vow of silence at a monastery. The deaf girl returns to the family home with a deaf child who she is looking after to find her alcoholic sister in a bad state and sleeping rough sometimes with her abusive boyfreind. The deaf girl starts to remember things from her childhood about her artist mother Magritte who paints vivid red paintings and her fathers proffessor who babysat them when they were children. She works out that the professor abused her sister. The POV of all the characters are told to a mystery person in a confessional way.It is eventually found out the professor who used to bring them cakes had set up the whole thing after her father dropped a picture of their family and the abusive proffessor thought the deaf girls sister was a near perfect replica of his own daughter who he had also abused. The book ends with the professor going back to his Scandinavian home to die poor and alone wear he talks constantly about his obsession with Norse mythology.

Around what year did you see this book?

Can you tell us more about the sisters - e.g., their ages, when did she become deaf, how they make a living, who are they living with, etc.?

What is the father's job? Did he stay at the monastery for a short time?

Who are the deaf child's parents? (Spoilers are okay - just give us a clear warning before revealing a spoiler.)
