Stephen (havan) | 335 comments Just noticed that J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories shows a first published date of 1948. Yet four of the nine were published AFTER 1950. What date should be used in a situation like this? The date that the first story was published or the date for the last one? You can't really have nine stories until the last of the nine is done, no?

Tytti | 163 comments The date of the last one. Though I am not so sure if it's reasonable in a situation where, for example, the author has died and some have been published years later posthumously but...

lethe | 13747 comments For the first published date it doesn't matter whether a book was published posthumously or not. Same with the stories in a collection, if some were first published after the author's death, they would still get the date they were published as the correct date.
