It’s no wonder Danes are so happy. They have an obscenely good quality of life. Yes, it’s expensive here. But it’s Denmark – it’s worth it. I don’t mind paying more for a coffee here because I know that it means the person serving me doesn’t a) hate me or b) have a crappy life. Everyone is paid a decent wage, everyone is looked after, and everyone pays their taxes, just as I pay mine. And if we all have marginally less money to buy more stuff that we don’t really need anyway as a result, well I’m starting to think it’s a deal worth making.
I am really enjoying my bookie time in Denmark - this is non-fiction - a memoir.

The main character, Nina, has just lost her job as a librarian; she has the germ of an idea that is bringing her back to life, giving her hope. The first step has resulted her being on a bus heading to Scotland.
“One moment she would look up from her book to see a gentle brown heath, the golden light playing through the heather; the next she looked up in time to see an osprey dive across the road toward a lock, which made her start; then, as the crested the next mountain, a ray of sunshine came out and she put her book down altogether”
Two standard-bearers walked behind Campbell, holding aloft the Union Jack and a five-coloured pennant with purple tassels which Rowland had become aware was the New Guard's own flag.

PC Jackie Watson forced the man over onto his face, cuffing his hands behind his back. He groaned and whimpered. Jackie smiled. "Serves you right, you dirty little bastard..." She glanced up at Rennie. "Anyone looking?" He said no, so she kicked him in the ribs. "That's for Christine, Laura, Gail, Sarah, Jennifer, Joanne and Sandra."
"Jesus Jackie!" Rennie grabbed her before she could do it again.
“No. Haven’t you been listening?”
Marcus would always remember that moment. It was to be the first time he would ever be faced with that most vexing of female quirks: the question that had nothing but wrong answers.”

Hehe! We've probably all asked that of our hapless males at some stage. I love to see the look of wild panic in their eyes while they search for an answer!

My teaser is from

...The storm raged on. In the pitch black, the thunder cracked as a roaring gale whipped through the narrow wynds and filthy closes of Dundee’s tenements...
(A wynd is a narrow alley – Scottish term)

My family come from the area around Dundee and I was born in a small town on the mouth of the Tay. We later moved to England but I spent most of my childhood summers at my grandmas's house overlooking the Tay and heard stories about the disaster.
He had been halfway through his ablutions, just about to dunk his shaving brush in water, when he decided to phone. He hadn't bothered to put his dressing gown on; he was sitting in his pyjamas in the armchair in the dining room, his very own armchair, waiting for the call to be put through, watching the smoke rise slowly from all the chimneys.

Is it a terrible burden, Phrynne? ;)

If some strange and terrible thing happens to you - that's tragedy
If some strange and terrible thing happens to someone else - that's just entertainment"

We cats get all limp and squishy when we have catnip; for humans wine seems to do the trick.

In Sally Berneathy's Death by Chocolate series, the MC has a cat who goes all limp and squishy over catnip too! I'd never heard of it until that series :)

Really Brenda? You've never heard of catnip?

Supposedly only 60% of cats like catnip. In my house 100% (seven of seven ) of mine go nuts over it then "get all limp and squishy!"

...he'd never been at risk of falling for her. Just as well, since Nick had come on the scene and he'd have made formidable competition, for all that he seemed civilised and gentlemanly in his tuxedo. Never underestimate Nick:that was the lesson Simon had learned the first time they trained together on the dojo mats as the Strathnairn Police Youth Club, when Nick had him floored in seconds despite a leg injury...
"Mum," Ryan hiccups, "you're not going to die too, are you? Will your brain start to bleed one day?"

Baffled, she walked into the combined living and sleeping area, and it was the same. Her things were just as she'd left them. But all traces of her husband and son were gone. As if they'd never been there at all. As if they'd been figments of her imagination all along.

Bates pushed his chair out and stood. "Try to be as inconspicuous as possible. We need you two to remain hidden. The Bartlett boys could be onto me."

…They weren’t chasing us, they were chasing you. And they weren’t chasing you. They were hunting you. They hunt all the cursed children. That’s how cursed children die…

...she felt something warm, wet, and sandpapery lick the entire right side of her face. She sniffled again, and Fen’s big gray head rubbed her shoulder affectionately.
“Thanks, Fen,” Morrigan said quietly. She heard Fenestra padding softly to the door. “Fen?”
“Mmm?” “Your saliva smells like sardines.”
“Yeah, well. I’m a cat.”
“Now my face smells like sardines.”
“I don’t care. I’m a cat."
LOL!! One book I'm destined to re-read I think! Brings back great memories reading your teasers Sally and Carolyn :)
The day Marjorie summoned Ava to the office, calling her from the steps that separated the sunken kitchen annexe from the formal living area, she'd wagged a finger and Ava had naturally thought the worst. With her mouth suddenly dry, she stopped to gulp a glass of water before she followed her employer, treading across the wooden floorboards and through the maze of wing-backed armchairs and sofas in the living room. She found Marjorie behind the desk in the adjacent office, pen poised.

Tricky Twenty-Two by Janet Evanovich

Still reading, and loving it, apparently 8 publishing houses fought over the rights - she is contracted for 3 but has 6 planned - also one of the studios in Hollywood has bought the movie rights

LOL - love Lou Lou! I have the next book in my hot little hand and earmarked to read later this year when we go on holidays (date still to be set)
