windows 8.1 (which I got back in 2013) and 10 (which I just bought last year) are stable. be sure to install the security tools (which includes Defender, their anti-virus software) and to have OS and browser auto-updates installed.
be aware that since Microsoft is moving to the cloud (as most software companies are), FWIW, my prediction is that their OS will become less a part of their business over the next 10 years.
since 2011, i've have a Macbook Pro as well. OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan) and I was just prompted to update to Sierra (OS X 10.12), which I will probably do. It's a minor update. Macs are quite popular now, so make sure to also install antivirus software. i use Sophos, which is free.

You have to bear in mind the cost for Mac, and that everything is then only Mac when you go that route. There is more compatibility and adaptability with Windows out there.

I personally prefer buying PCs and switching them out every few years, and this is possible to do since they are so cheap :)

I got a MacBook Air nearly 2 years ago and love it, it's so light for travelling too, though I still have my Windows desktop for using Word and Excel. Macs are not so secure as they're made out to be though as I've read that hackers love the challenge of trying to hack Apple - I've had no probs with mine though. I am very careful to avoid dodgy sites, to clear history regularly and have strong passwords with a different one for every account.
There has to be a better way. I had a Mac in school, I guess it's time to give up and go back!
