The Fault in Our Stars
question
Can a 12-year-old read the Fault in Our Stars?
yes, but only if they are very very very very very mature because otherwise they will be talking about . . . contents forever. ( well at least until they are more mature)

I think this really depends on the kid (in case you feel offended: you are still a child at 12. This isn't meant in any way offensive but as a fact).
The book deals with cancer - a terminal illness and of course dying. Those topics can be very upsetting. Then there's also the romance plot to consider. Yes, there is a sex scene in the book, no, it is not graphic.
I guess some parents will object to have their 12-year-old read anything like this, but I guess that's only because countries like the US often don't have proper sex ED (telling a kid that abstinence is better than protection is actually nonsensical and dangerous).
So yeah, it depends.

A-a-ha-he-e-m. I'm a 12 year old. And I'm pretty sure I read the book with no problem. I mean, it was pretty good, right? And true, I feel like I'm the only one in my SCHOOL (the 8th and 9th graders freak out too!) who hasn't fallen over themselves to cry their guts out at the movie theaters and tried to project their feelings of sadness and love for the book. So there. I'm not trying to be "mature", but that's just how I feel.
Yes, I should think so, as a very good friend of mine read it who is only 12 years old.
I don't think maturity is the main issue for this book, sure it has some mature scenes, but I think the main problem is could a 12 year old understand the book. Sure, they would get the gist of the book, but parts of the book are hard to muddle through and they might not get the language/context (An Imperial Affliction quotes could be very hard to understand).
I wouldn't let my child read this. With the language, etc. It is not made for a 11-12 yr old to read, imo.
I know of a lot of kids who read this when they were 12, and I (imo) think it's a fine age if they're comfortable with mildly mature content. The sex scene in the book wasn't graphically described, but there was some swearing certain kids won't feel comfortable with. There's also the fact that this story does deal with cancer, but most of the tone is more optimistic/humorous than sad. I'd say if a 12-year-old wants to read it, no one should stop them from reading, but they should be aware that it was probably written for a more mature crowd.
Only if they are mature enough. They will be talking about it to all their friends and laugh if they aren't mature enough .
Easily. Should they read it? Not if they're impressionable.
I read it when I was 12! Though, I was pretty mature for my age, and my reading level is very high.
I know plenty of 11 year olds who read it.

Yes. I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed to. This book is very PG. It might teeter on the PG-13 precipice but there is nothing there that would make me want to prohibit a 12 year old from reading it. I don't think 12 year olds should be discouraged to read anything, no matter how "racey" it may be. That's the age where you really should start to encourage more reading than less.
Since you said if they're very mature...I would read it first and then you be the judge. My little brother who's 14 told me everyone at his school is reading this book...but then again, he's in gr.8 and all the girl readers he told me (I know I find it sexist he told me the girls are reading it!) said they loved it and are head over heels for it. I'm predicting they're 13 turning 14 like he was. I'll also confess I did gasp at 12 so I would wait for 13 to know they're really ready :)
A 12-year old can read this with no problems. Kids are learning about these things (death, sex, blah blah) earlier now than they did, to be honest I would be surprised if a 12-year old DIDN'T understand what what happening in this book.
As for maturity, that of course depends on who's reading. I read a lot of 'mature' books when I was 12, no one stopped me and I wasn't immature about it at all. In fact I never talked about them. But of course there will be some people that just can't help themselves.

A mature 12 year old because there is a lot of cursing and kissing. There are also feels that could kill them. That's what happened to me.
yes. this book isn't even... well that bad. the only bad thing is the part where they have sex but really, its not that bad compared to some books i read when i was 12
I'm 12, (Almost 13) My friends read this book and said it was okay so yeah.
I'm twelve and I read it. It should be fine, all I can think of that is "bad" would be implied sex, kissing and maybe slight vulgar language but I read it a while ago so the vulgarness (I know vulgarness us not a word) could just be like damn or darn. Otherwise it's fine, especially if this twelve year old is very mature.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! 13! I freaking hate it when I see kids reading books not for their age. Idc how old or mature you think you are THIS MATERIAL IS NOT FOR YOU SO STOP TRYING TO ACT FREAKING GROWN JUST STOP! Wait till 8th grade to read this. Plus its too deep for a 6th grader to understand. Even late 7th grade but no please stop right there at 12 i can't. it just pisses me off. WHEN YOU'RE F*CKING TWELVE YOU'RE STILL IN F*CKING DIAPERS OK!?!?!? DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED THAT JUST REALLY GOT ME F8CKING ANNOYED! lol there goes my rant
