Yes, share your secrets, Obiwan.

There comes a point where if the speed is too fast, I feel like I'm listening just for the sake of finishing it (on titles I don't want to DNF) rather than for enjoyment of the book itself. I've been trying really hard not to stop enjoying the journey while also trying to achieve my incomplete series goals, but it can be tough to balance. It actually is a good rule of thumb for me that if I get impatient with a book at a conservative speed, it probably means I need to abandon it for something else.

My secret is simply persistence.....and naps. :)

message 253: by Liam (new)

Liam (leeman729) | 828 comments I average about 1.5 speed for audio as well, basically same as Scott. If the book is really bad, I'll speed it up to 2x just because I really don't like DNFing a book that I started already. I did this when I read The Vagrant, because that book lacked a lot of substance (I though). If it's easy reading, I'll be at around 1.75.

You must have a gifted mind Aristea if you're listing at 3x speed, because that is truly impressive!

I loved that book but I also read it. The author has an interesting style that might not have translated to audio. He tends to end sentences with a string of adjectives.

As an example: They descended the plain, arid, smoky, portenuous.

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. Normally an author will describe all of these elements and explain why they make it portentous but he left it to the reader. I wouldn't like it all the time but liked the change of pace.

This is only and exclusively if I have the book in front of me. I cannot listen to it 3x without the text in front of my eyes! And what I love about this approach is that I know when I will finish the book - I can calculate how many hours it will take to finish the book and I LOVE this aspect!

Naps? Tell me more! Because I am envisioning this: Scott awake for 4 hours, sleeps for 20 minutes. Repeat. Which explains how you can persistently read books at an incredible pace!

I get 5.5-6.5 hours of sleep her night and most days I get a 15-20 minute nap. Your 20 minute sleep version of me is entertaining in a cyborg sort of way. :)

21st series brought up to date since the challenge inception.

Lockwood 4/4 The Screaming Staircase

These are great audio books. Love the cheeky British humor and the light tone. Great for the kids.

Thanks Tammie. No new series between now and Oct 5th and I'll meet my goals while still starting, and often finishing, a lot of new series. I think this has made me more disciplined. Hopefully others have gotten the same out of it.

message 261: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 5952 comments I certainly have. I've made some good progress this year, even though my list is still pretty long.

Your list was much bigger than mine to start so it's not apples for apples. You've done a better job at shedding series to the abandoned list as well.

I'm going to hopefully use one of my "credits" this year to start it lol.

Under 10 by October seems lofty! Good thing you have fantastic planning skills.

Nice. Book three comes out in November so it's a great time to start it.

Buddy reads and audio books will take care of 5 which means I need 4 more to get to 9. I have 4 series where the average last book is only 300 pages. If I can squeeze those in I'll make it.

These are the top four. It's been killing me to hold off on the top two. The second two if they weren't scheduled would be equally so. Low Town today because I just finished a gritty book I loved is calling my name a lot.

When the Heavens Fall
Twelve Kings in Sharakhai
Low Town (scheduled already)
Leviathan Wakes (scheduled already)

I skimmed back a bit in this thread and saw some talk of audiobooks/speed... I know someone in another group who can listen to an audiobook while reading a DIFFERENT paperback/ebook... I don't understand HOW she does it, but apparently she can...

Iain I can listen to an audiobook while reading an ebook as well just don't think I would get anything out of it.

19th abandoned series Daughter of Smoke & Bone Days of Blood & Starlight 2/3 DNF.

The author just prattled on about inane shit and it couldn't keep my interest. Too bad because the world was setup nicely. If somebody took the world and rewrote this as grimdark it could be really good.
