This has been bothering me for months that I can't remember it. Any help would be appreciated.

Definitely not children, but whether it was adult or teen I couldn't say.

I feel like it was some sort of science fiction.

I wish I could remember more but the only thing I can recall is that scene. :(

Do you recall whether this particular scene was near the beginning of the book or the end? Any recollection of how old the main character is? Whether he got on the plane voluntarily or involuntarily?

Involuntarily. (& I think the main character was female. ...maybe?) I couldn't say when it happens though (beginning or end).

I keep thinking Ender's Game but it's not.
