How would you describe Updike’s outlook on the world?

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments His misogyny is well documented- I did a google search and found several pages on the topic. Even when he tried to staunch the criticism with The Witches of Eastwick, he failed.
He is a very good writer. His sentence construction is flawless, and he gets his point across with a minimum of words- a style I appreciate. But he's a woman hater, and it is painful to read.
Even Rabbit and Janice's baby is a (unbaptized) girl. And look what Updike did to her.

Lynn L | 152 comments I'm not certain what his outlook is. But I think he was relatively "easy" on Rabbit. But he seemed to have no problem labeling Ruth (prostitute) and Janice(alcoholic).

Pip | 1822 comments I think I would like to read more of Updike before I pass judgement. I purposefully haven't read any reviews yet.
