Segilola Salami (segilolasalami) | 405 comments So possibly disgusting question but I really would like to know the answer

was video chatting with a male friend yesterday and he raised his arm to have a drink. what I saw made me think razor blades were never invented for guys.

what I want to know is, why do guys feel the need to NOT shave their underarm? birds could live in there. my friend was proud to share that he only shaves his underarm twice a year. what gives?

Quantum (quantumkatana) It as to do w/pheromones.

message 3: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan LOL.

Shaved or unshaved? (ponders for a long moment, sips coffee, hmmmmm?!)

It's a personal choice, best discussed with your intimate partner(s) before making a firm decision.

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 291 comments You do understand that men's armpits are carbon sinks? A bit like the rainforest. Cut it down and the dead vegetative matter mineralises into CO2 and adds to climate change.

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 291 comments In fact I am sorry that I omitted consideration of this important area from my 2011 book, Crops and Carbon: Paying Farmers to Combat Climate Change. I shall add a chapter when it is revised.

Jen Pattison | 409 comments Arm pit shaving has only become a cultural necessity in the West in the past 40 years or so, I don't see why anyone should feel obliged to do so. It's news to me too about men shaving their armpits, when did they start doing that?

Random tidbit - the Scots have a wonderful dialect word for arm pit - ockster.

What else? Should they lisp, carry a purse, wear a bra, hide behind you in times of danger?

My wife preferred being married to a MAN. Most women we knew are the same way and they are indeed married to real men.

(Smell of testosterone emanates from the cave) :-D

(i'm not making fun of your name, Al, but in the context of the discussion, your moniker, "Tank", reminded me that I should read this graphic novel, Tank Girl.)

i don't think that Tank Girl has armpit hair, does she?

message 20: by Segilola (new)

Segilola Salami (segilolasalami) | 405 comments so the general consensus is that it is a "MANLY" thing to have lots of underarm hair. I have been duly schooled ehehehehehhehe

Quantum (quantumkatana) Segilola wrote: "so the general consensus is that it is a "MANLY" thing to have lots of underarm hair. I have been duly schooled ehehehehehhehe"

but i think that the important thing to note is that it is culturally mediated as Jen pointed out. in addition, we can see that reflected in many forms of media. however, appearance, including armpit hair, is less important in mainly textual--as opposed to graphic novels and manga--books than in visual arts.

furthermore, it's intimately tied to the Dress Codes and Gender: Body Policing or Human Nature thread.

do you have a source? i'd be interested in reading about this topic.

Uh, I'm sorry, Al 'Tank', but I have seen big, hulking men break down to pieces in combat situations in war zones, while tiny women kept their cool and did their job. Size and physical strength has nothing to do with courage or ability, while modern wars more and more need bright, quick-thinking people.

do tell.

so, i suppose that puts to rest the argument against allowing women in combat units and even in mixed gender as long as they meet the requirements.

message 24: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 30, 2016 11:28PM) (new)

The Canadian Forces have had women in combat units, including infantry, for years now, with many serving (and dying) in Afghanistan before Canada retired from the mission. If they meet the requirements, then women can take the job. I am sorry to say that American forces have been years behind many other NATO countries in this regard. For those who may say that this makes the Canadian Forces, or any other military using women in combat trades, somehow inferior, then I would tell them to look at the combat record of the Canadian Forces. Enough with the machismo bragging!

Just empirical observation, Alex. In my youth only women shaved their armpits, men didn't; I remember reading an article about the new phenomenon of men shaving/waxing their body (other than facial hair) in the late 1990s. I also remember watching an Olympic opening ceremony, late 70s/early 80s and seeing all the Eastern Bloc female athletes doing the Olympic salute, underarm hair in abundance and that seemed really bizarre to me. I guess they all shave/wax now.

(Edit - you can find a research paper on pretty much anything now, I'm sure that there's The Social History of Armpit Shaving somewhere.)

Is it armpit hair that makes a man a man? Sheesh, can't we account for personal preference here?
