The October Reading Challenge is Ghosts.

You can read a historical fiction mystery, like Silence for the Dead or Ghost Talkers or a non-fiction book about famous hauntings like Famous Ghosts and Haunted Places. Remember picture books work too, like The Berenstain Bears and the Haunted House.

I hope you guys have a spooky time!

Fiction, non-fiction, adult, teen and kids books apply.

Becky | 280 comments I plan on reading Heart-Shaped Box, but am interested in seeing what everyone else chooses!

message 3: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 112 comments I am LOVING the series Lockwood and Co. I have no. 4 The Creeping Shadow on hold so if it comes on time, that is what I will be reading. The Screaming Staircase is the first one.

My co-worker had some additional suggestions. So here they are:

The Lovely Bones
The Weaver and the Factory Maid
The Woman in White
Sabriel
On a Red Station, Drifting
The Union Street Bakery

There's a great Goodreads List FILLED with Ghost Stories too:

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I've read The Woman in White and Sabriel -- both really good.

I'm doing The Girl with Ghost Eyes, also a Reader's Choice.

message 6: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 255 comments I'm reading two cozy mysteries, The Ghost And The Femme Fatale and Pleating For Mercy.

message 7: by Tiffinie (new)

Tiffinie Adams | 18 comments I intend to reread an oldie... Ghost House by Clare McNally.

message 8: by Donna (last edited Oct 02, 2016 11:21PM) (new)

Donna | 72 comments I always forget to post my books because I wait for the end of the month. I'm going to try not to do that.

Ghost stories are probably one of my least favorite genres. They can either be way too scary or completely hokey. I've read 2 so far and they were good choices. They are YA paranormal and they weren't scary or hokey. So yay for that.

The Haunted - 4 stars
The Hidden - 1 star....truly dismal

Oooh! looks too scary for me. Happy reading!

I learned the hard way that I can't wait. All intentions aside ...

message 11: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I just read Turn On the Night by Geraldo Valério. This wordless children's book tells a story of a young girl who turns into a magical wolf and takes her animal friends on an adventure.

So glad we can count children's books for our challenges! I'd have had to leave so many challenges not completed if we had to read "adult" level books.

So I've completed the challenge!

message 12: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments I finished The Girl with Ghost Eyes. It's pretty good, though not awesome.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments I read Wilma Tenderfoot The Case of the Fatal Phantom. It's the third in the series and has a variety of spooks. :)
If you haven't tried this middle grade mystery series, I highly recommend them. They're so fun!

message 14: by Donna (new)

Donna | 72 comments Today, I read Ghost Hawk.

While I'm clearly not the target audience for this, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, let along the target audience (which is children in middle grades).

I forgot Aunt Dimity's Death by Nancy Atherton

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda Nielson | 279 comments Since I don't like any kind of Ghost/Horror stories, I read a Juvenile non-fiction book Scooby-Doo! and the Truth Behind Ghosts by Terry Collins This is about my speed.

I think this is a wonderful choice! Good thinking!

Hey all,

Looks like you've all been finding fun books to read with ghosts. Except for Donna, I'm sorry the book you chose was not fun :(

But, I do have another interesting suggestion from a co-worker:
The Phantom Coach: Collected Ghost Stories

Great for fans of Short Stories.

message 19: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (justknitting) | 137 comments I am reading After House. It is interesting, the ghost is quirky, but it is turning into as much (or more) romance as it is ghost! Why? let's just have a good scare!

anyone else read a fun, ghostly book?

message 21: by Jeana (new)

Jeana (jeanaclaudine) I just finished reading The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde to my 9-year-old and we loved it!

message 22: by Tiffinie (new)

Tiffinie Adams | 18 comments just finished The night sister by Jennifer McMahon and am starting Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments Jeana wrote: "I just finished reading The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde to my 9-year-old and we loved it!"

I wondered if anyone would choose it, it is such a fun story! And a follow-up to watch the Charles Laughton version of the film would be great fun! If you can find it.

we have that dvd in the library system!

message 25: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments Finished Heart-Shaped Box, which was okay. Now listening to The Screaming Staircase on CD.

message 26: by Jeana (new)

Jeana (jeanaclaudine) There's a movie of Caterville Ghost! Yay!

message 27: by Alyson (new)

Alyson | 98 comments I read Raina Telgemeier's newest graphic novel, "Ghosts". I enjoyed it in an unexpected way--I really liked where it went!

Have you ever read "The Discontented Ghost" by Scott Corbett? It's a teen level retelling of the Canterville Ghost, told from the ghost's perspective. It's a fun twist. I love the original by Oscar Wilde, too.

message 29: by JoAnn (new)

JoAnn (jladybug) | 144 comments I read A Teaspoon of Earth and Sea. It was an amazing story. Our heroine never sees an actual ghost, but her past haunts her and shapes her life.

The challenge ends on Monday! Just one more weekend to read something with ghosts!

message 31: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments Just finished The Screaming Staircase, a great choice for this challenge. Thanks, Jenny, for the recommendation.

message 32: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (justknitting) | 137 comments I read The Haunting of Bechdel Mansion books 0 (prequel) and 1. Not impressed! the prequel was not a prequel, just a short retelling of 1 and 1 ended with a major cliffhanger now have to wait for 2, if it still interests me when ever it comes out. They seemed like a first book for this author, very beginner writing.

message 33: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackie123) | 263 comments I listened to The Screaming Staircase (Lockwood & Co #1). A really fun series that I plan on continuing. I thought the most interesting thing about the book was that the main characters are teenagers! Yikes!

message 34: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 112 comments I read The Creeping Shadow, Lockwood &Co. #4. I loved it! Jackie and Becky, I'm glad you liked The Screaming Staircase.

message 35: by Casandria (new)

Casandria I also read Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier, which I loved! I'm a huge fan of the Lockwood & Co books, but I'd read all of the novels. I picked up The Dagger in the Desk, a novella in that series. It wasn't nearly as good as the longer books, however :(. Back to waiting for book 5...
