Yes I was surprised too but justified by saying she wanted a maid of honor not a matron of honor and because Jim was the best man!
I think she had started to oppose him. I know it was somewhere in the books (book #7 maybe?) . Logically his reason is that she was powerful and he can't stand anyone more or as powerful as himself.
