Wallflower / Bluestocking / Spinster / Governess Romance: Most people love to root for the underdog, and a wallflower or spinster was certainly that in Historical Romances. And governesses were often the odd woman out. Although we won’t restrict you to the past, we hope people are a little more enlighten in the new millennium. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Romances With Spinsters, Wallflowers, Or Old Maids; Historical Romances Featuring Bluestockings, Scholars, & Independent Misses; Governess & Teacher Romance Books.)
Since we were hijacked by Aliens last month, for October SFoM we are doing the winner of the September poll.

Anita (anitanodiva) I'll play this month and read Devil in Winter Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas by Lisa Kleypas. I read the first two in the series and even posted the following as the start of a review for this one:

"How Lisa Kleypas is going to redeem St. Vincent after what he did, I haven't a clue. And why Evie would want anything to do with him, I just can't fathom. This is going to be interesting."

Barbara (bookwormrdh) | 8 comments I'm in with the first in The Spindle Cove series by Tessa Dare. A night to Surrender.

message 21: by Lara (new)

Lara | 2335 comments I just read The Rogue's Wager (Sinful Brides) by Christi Caldwell , which was good. Now I'll have to see if any of the other books I'm planning to tackle this month also fit.

message 22: by Mee (last edited Oct 12, 2016 11:46PM) (new)

Mee | 77 comments I will read ~
A Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1) by Tessa Dare ~ 10/1
A Week to Be Wicked (Spindle Cove, #2) by Tessa Dare ~ 10/2
A Lady by Midnight (Spindle Cove, #3) by Tessa Dare ~ 10/3

message 23: by Lara (new)

Lara | 2335 comments I just started The Rogue Not Taken (Scandal & Scoundrel, #1) by Sarah MacLean since I have to return A Scot in the Dark (Scandal & Scoundrel #2) by Sarah MacLean to the library soon,

message 24: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I'm reading Wallflower (The Old Maids' Club, #1) by Catherine Gayle I figured can't go wrong with it with wallflower in the title.

message 25: by Lara (new)

Lara | 2335 comments I finished The Rogue Not Taken (Scandal & Scoundrel, #1) by Sarah MacLean , which definitely has a bluestocking heroine.

I forgot to mention that The Rogue's Wager (Sinful Brides) by Christi Caldwell has a heroine who prefers numbers to people and likes to read advanced mathematics. She also works as a bookkeeper for her brother.

message 26: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) I finished Devil in Winter Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas by Lisa Kleypas and loved it. Then I got an ARC by Anne Stuart. It is a re-issue of one of her Regency romances about a Spinster. Great! It fit in with this month's sub-genre. The Spinster and the Rake The Spinster and the Rake by Anne Stuart . No one writes bad boys like Anne Stuart.

message 27: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinmy) I've read a lot of Anne Stuart but I've never heard of that book. Let me know what you think of it.

message 28: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) I really liked it. It was first published in 1982, but doesn't show its' age. The Spinster and the Rake The Spinster and the Rake by Anne Stuart by Anne Stuart.

message 30: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) I've got that one on hold at the library. Looking forward to getting it. I'm # 9 on the list. Popular book.

I've read one Jennifer McQuiston book and DNF'd another. Her style is not for me.

I haven't read a lot of newly published historical recently. Most of them are too modern for HR and I don't enjoy that.
I've read all of Jennifer McQuiston except this one. This one had a cast of very annoying secondary character and some very unbelievable situations.

I agree, most are contemporary romances dressed in regency dresses.

message 41: by ⚜️XAR (new)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I'm participating in Dewey's 24 hour Readathon and I finished Any Duchess Will Do (Spindle Cove, #4) by Tessa Dare last hour. I liked it because Pauline was both a bit of a spinster and a bit of a bluestocking. A good read overall!

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) I read The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1) by Julia Quinn and I really enjoyed it.

*grins* You're welcome! I read it...last month, I think, and kinda enjoyed it! The heroine reminded me of Sheldon's girlfriend on Big Bang Theory!
