Looks good, but Rosemary is now my co-moderator. Simon is no longer involved. Could you please amend?
I'll have a think over the weekend about anything else that would be helpful to have included.
Thanks, Rosen!
Hi Rosen,I'm not sure how this works, but I love the idea! Would this cover things like: how to upload our books to Amazon, sources for editors, promotion ideas, how to use Scrivener, etc?
Thank you for setting this up!
Anna, thanks.Patti, please could you edit the page yourself? I'm trying to start as I mean to go on, otherwise the project will get overwhelmingly big.
Dawn, yes, I hope it will cover those things. There are already a fair few promotion ideas. Feel free to add things as you see fit.
Kath wrote: "I've just added Rosemary but Simon is still showing as mod on this site."Yes, and will remain as he created the group. I don't believe it's possible to transfer 'ownership'.
Thanks for adding Rosemary.
I wondered about adding something like this, perhaps under the heading 'ethos'"Unlike some groups, UKAKF welcomes author participation across the entire group, not merely within their own author threads. Authors are regarded as full members of the group.
This membership comes at a cost. Authors who post are expected to hang round to respond to their posts, to take part in discussions and to contribute generally.
Whilst promotion is restricted to an author's own thread, there are threads where someone can submit the promo for a book to have it critiqued and changes suggested. In such situations, as part of a discussion it is not unreasonable for someone to post a link to their own promo.
Similarly there have been discussions on 'author biographies' and again, in such a discussion, linking to your own, or even quoting sections, is entirely reasonable.
However flyby posts where you pimp your book in a thread or several threads simultaneously before disappearing into the night without answering questions, are not welcome. If you're lucky the moderators will just remove the promo. If you're unlucky members will find it and note you down and quietly add you to the list of authors they intend never to read."
It's just I feel that the ethos of a group is something a little different to the rules
Jim, that sounds perfect. Gets the point across, that commitment to the group is necessary, that it is a "group" of like-minded (usually!) people and clearly shows support for its members and their enjoyment of the threads and discussions. Great.Rosen, I am just tidying a presentation on "Writing, Publishing & Promoting in an online age" for the Jersey Literary Festival and have had to do a fair bit of research. I will have a look at the wiki, probably next week-end as I am run-ragged at the moment, and see what I can add. Brilliant idea.
Ditto. It's nice to have a place to promote, but joining in with the group would help with the promotion anyway.

It's good Jim. As the ultimate in time-wasting, I'm wondering whether to create a shelf of books I never intend to read...
Do wikis have flyby traps, Rosen?
Good job, Jim! Besides, this is a fun group. I know I've learned a lot. The people who don't stick around are only hurting themselves.
This is a completely fracking genius idea. I'm commenting so that I can get updates about this post and then if I ever get any time in my life, ever again which isn't about being a mum, or arranging carers or clinging pathetically to the last vestiges of my social life I'll contribute something. I have an article about what happened when I made one of my books perma free I that's any use.Cheers

Jim, yes please promote.M.T., new articles are welcome, provided they're written in the encyclopedia style, i.e. in third person, factual versus opinion, etc. Thank you.

Cool, OK I'll check it out and at some point, I'll do some info. I am always delighted to share any information I can. It's hard enough getting ahead in this game!
This is great Rosen. I will have a look to see if there is anything I can usefully add, having not yet self published.
My feelings too, Pam. If I knew enough to write a Wiki page, I wouldn't need a mate to publish for me!
The beauty of wikis is that you don't need to know enough to write a page in order to contribute. You might even be using a page, when you realise that you could add a sentence / change a word. Some writers will add 1,000 words at once, but most pages will evolve little by little.
Perhaps we should set up a black library, just so those who do hit and runs or unthinking spam posts can be gathered together in one place. It's nice to know who to avoid :-)
Jim, he'd written some fairly good content, aside from his links. I'm hoping he's not beyond redemption! But yes, I will start blacklisting people who take the mick.David, yes, if you edit a page, you get free advertising on its sidebar. I had hoped this would be enough for people. It's more than most wikis offer.

So wait a minute, you mean, on top of the users books at the side he was posting links to his books in the content? He must have been having a grin.
Cheers

Blimey! What a cheeky get!
That was me. I tried inserting images to show step-by-step how this was done, but couldn't insert images, so I said you could see the results on my book covers. I wasn't trying for cheeky advertising (but I'll accept it), just looking to help others with creating covers, which isn't massively difficcult, but some people lack the confidence to try.
When I first posted advice on the Wiki, I didn't have an author profile on BookHippo, but was invited to add one.
I'll remove the invitation to check out my book cover, but is there any way to insert images to support step-by-step instructions?
Thanks for the explanation Chris, and for being honest. You've helped lower my cynicism levels, dramatically. On my computer, your books have been showing up in the sidebar for a number of days. Are you seeing something different?
I've already removed links to your books. Please don't do it again. The Guidelines are quite clear on this:
"Please do not: Mention yourself, your book, your friend's book or anything else that may be considered advertising."
Also, no, I'm afraid you can't add images at the moment. This would mean allowing people to upload files to the server, which opens up security threats. Good suggestion, though.

Between us, we know a lot, so why don't we put it all down in one place, that others can benefit from?
For those of you who don't know, a wiki is a website that's written and updated by the general public. You can edit pages directly.
Please can I have a volunteer to check over the UKAKF page?
Also, if anybody has anything to add to any of the other pages, please feel free to edit them. Your books get advertised in the sidebar of pages you add meaningful content to.
