Abhijeet (reading_is_magic) | 1 comments Publication date: Read it in the late 1980s, not sure of publication date but felt contemporary.

Plot details: Boy builds robot that generates a wave that makes everyone in the area like the boy. The more the person disliked the boy to begin with, the more they like him now. It has no effect on people who already like the boy, which includes the object of boy's crush. Unfortunately, the robot is interfering with some govt agency/program and they send out people to dismantle the robot.

Abhijeet, was Mary's suggestion of Ernest Pickle's Remarkable Robot your book or are you still looking?

Capn | 3506 comments "Ernest Pickle, computer whizkid and loner, is the school’s most unpopular person. Even his teacher doesn’t like him! But then Ernest builds himself a robot called Glen, whose talents include cookery and home renovation. And with a little help from Glen, Ernest decides to turn himself into the most popular boy at school."

page 61: While Glen’s frequency was effective on human minds only within a radius of fifty- one point two metres, it could affect computers at a greater distance. This explains Glen’s interference with the Rockalilly Tracing CA.123 computer.

page 85: The other exciting development was THE ERNEST PICKLE FAN CLUB. Rowena was the founding member: she wrote the rules. Those who wanted to join had to pay two dollars and pledge loyalty and constant friendship to Ernest. Each paying member was then given a certificate with a number on it, and a photo of Ernest Relaxing At Home to carry around in their back pockets or hang around their necks. The joining fee of two dollars was put into THE ERNEST PICKLE FUTURE FUND which had never had the chance to amount to anything because most of the money was used up to replace photos that members would throw away once they got home and out of the frequency range.

(ISIO agents - the frequency the robot Glen is producing is messing with oeprations. (view spoiler)).

... so "Possibly Solved", I think. Shame about Abhijeet bailing...
