Spencer's life is turned around when he finds out that there are magical creatures in his school that are sucking in brain waves and releasing deadly toxins that are dangerous for the students. Throughout the book Spencer, along with the janitors embark on dangerous adventures trying to save the school.
The main conflict in the story was Spencer trying to fight off the BEM(The Bureau of Educational Maintenance). In the beginning the BEM wanted Spencer to work for them and try to stop the janitors(Walter and Marv), but Spencer not knowing that the BEM was actually bad agreed to help them stop the janitors. Finally when Spencer was caught while helping the BEM was not given detention but was to help the janitors clean. When Spencer and the janitors were finally alone they told him the actual truth behind the BEM and how they were trying to fire all the janitors who kept helping the school by capturing the magical creatures. In the end Spencer and the janitors stopped the BEM as so they thought because at the very last part of the book Walter was fired and Marv was sucked into a dust storm leaving Spencer alone.
The main setting for the book was Spencer's school where he first saw the creatures and met the janitors who would end up helping him after all. The school was the perfect setting for this kind of story, it made it so easy to visualize what was going on because I put the story as if it were my school being attacked by these creatures, so I could see exactly where the characters were in the school. There were two other minor settings, one of them being Spencer's house where he usually ended up coming home late with his angry mom to ask all the questions. The other really minor setting was an apartment building where Spencer was attacked by dozens and dozens of the magical creatures, and he ended up flying on a broom out of the window.
I think this book was really good from the magical action the the suspense of going to the next chapter. Spencer to me was a good character but I think he could have been older, I feel he was too young for the setting and position he was in. A junior high or high school student would have been better in my opinion. The rest of the book overall was really good and I can't wait to read the next one.
