Read in order?

Thinking about reading this series. Is is necessary to read them in order? I'm going to try and get them from the library, but they might not all be available when I want them.

Also, would you consider them "cozy mysteries"? It is not my favorite genre. The age of the narrarator concerns me that it might not hard-edged enough for my tastes.

Thanks, all!

Yes. You must must read them in order, there is a main plot line that runs though the series.

Word of warning though, the first few books are brilliant but then the series runs out of steam.

I don't consider them cozy mysteries. Flavia is young but she's brilliant and one of the most interesting characters I've run across in a series. I do agree with the other poster that the first few books are the best but I've still enjoyed all of them. They are much better than most book series.
