I am about a 1/3 of the way through right now and this book is impressive to say the least. It started slow and I have had to do a bit of research to understand the story a little more. It has recently taken a great turn, telling the story from a first person, because Heinrich is actually one of the original party to summit. I cannot imagine the intensity and fearlessness that these men exhibited. And to think about the challenges that they faced that would not exist, such as climbing in melting ice and getting soaked and sleeping in a bivouac (ledge). Gore-tex would take care of that. Also, gear is so much lighter, and we have ways to scout out the routes before you get there. These guys were amazing. I am giving it a 3 stars because it had a slow start. I may be giving it a 5 by the end though.

Personally I found that the further Harrer gets past his own exploits in 1938, the less involving the book became. Not surprising I suppose because in those early years he is talking about the exploits of himself, his colleagues and peers. In later years he is talking more about the facts and events of the climbs which I found to be less involving. Still a great read though.
