This is a series of books about the characters rise in the space navy. tge captain give him control as he knew he was not involved in the mutiny as he tried to save him. The mutiny was buy some rebels who wanted to succeed from the empire/Kingdom one was another ensign assigned to pilot/tactical and hates main char

It's not either of them. I'm sure the mutineers were from mars? I don't think it's very old series

The admiral son is also in serving under a fake name but the people helping the mutineers know and wanted to capture him. The ensign works this out but does not no why until later. basically with the mutiny all the officers left are ensigns.

the ship was to be payment to the outside interests helping the mutineers who also wanted the admirals son. there is also a girl ensign who disagrees with him but becomes his sort of ally. love interest in later books.

The books are really good I would recommend I just can't think what they are called after my Sci-fi binge lately

finally found the book after looking through about 2000 in my calibre library this is the first in the series its great really recommend.
