I see no reason why the title sort field would/should work differently from the author sort field, i.e. no accents/diacritics (even though the accented letters are sometimes/usually? sorted correctly).
I would like to see some clarification as well.

What has the conclusion been?
Also, what about punctuation in title: I don't mean the colon separating a title from its subtitle, I mean what if we have, say, an exclamation point in the middle of the title. Do we erase it from the sort by title?
Finally, side question regarding series and sort by title. Which one would it be:
Title -> the title (series, #xx)
sort by -> title, the (series, #xx) OR title (series, #xx), the
(just trying to be clear once and for all about what's supposed to make its way in that field and how)

The series question is that it doesn't really matter and either is acceptable.

I guess I can just give up on that and let it do whatever it sees fit then.

Part of the problem with the auto-fill is that with leading articles in some languages it doesn't put them at the end as is proper. I usually let the system auto-fill, but check them for this type of title. These may require editing (I think it does some correctly, and not others, but I don't remember which if any). I have been known to correct the accents at that time.

Perhaps someone else can let us know how to handle these situations.
