message 151: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin's mom raised her eyebrows. "A girl, huh?" Arlington rolled her eyes. "Oh, stop it mom. She's in one of my classes, we went over to her house after school and read." she shrugged. "Nothing special, really."

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree instantly felt her face go red. "Um, yeah. Her name is Arlington. She's really nice," she said. And she treats me like a human being... she thought out of spite for her peers. "Honey, that's great! Can we meet her?" asked Bree's mom. "No," said Bree, much too quickly. Her dad raised an eyebrow at her. Bree hurried on, "Well, I mean, yes... But not, like, soon. Cause I just met her and stuff. You know?" Bree's mother and father exchanged a look. Bree's dad shrugged. "You're the boss, hoss." he said, going back to eating.

message 153: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "Well, I'm glad you're making friends!" Arlin's mom said, "You need more of them." Arlington rolled her eyes. "I do not. I have enough friends." Her mom took a sip of her drink, "Whatever you say, honey." Arlington was silent for a moment before saying. "She's really great. And kind of...cute."

message 154: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree exhaled out the side of her mouth, then began to eat. Her mom thankfully dropped the subject as well, and began to talk about her day. Bree tried to eat faster so she could escape to her room and listen to music. When she was done she cleared her plate over and rushed to her room before her parents could say anything or stop her.

message 155: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) The family spent the rest of dinner chatting; her mom had heard from Arlin's brother Seth earlier that day and said he was doing well at school. After dinner, Arlington headed up to do homework. She couldn't just ignore it all.

message 156: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree laid in her bed with her hands folded gently on her stomach. Damn, I wish I'd gotten her number... Bree thought regretfully. She began to hum a lullaby she learned from her cousin a long while ago. She couldn't remember the name of it, but it was definitely about love.

message 157: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) ((Should we time skip?))

message 158: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments ((Sure. Just the next day at school? Lunchtime?))

message 159: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) ((sure!))

Arlington strode into the cafeteria, looking around for a table to sit at so she could put her bag down. She liked to mark her place before getting food, just in case.

message 160: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree sat reading the second Harry Potter book at an empty table no one ever sat at. She looked up for a moment to see Arlington walking around. "Hey! Arlin!" She called, waving her over. This'll be a new experience... she thought, inwardly scoffing.

message 161: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlington looked around at the sound of her name, finally catching sight of Bree. Her face lit up. "Hey, Bree!" she said, coming to sit beside her. She put her bag down. "What's up?"

message 162: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Nothing much," Bree said scooting over so Arlington could sit. The familiar butterflies in Bree's chest creeped in again. Goddammit feelings, go away... she scolded herself. "You?"

message 163: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "Not much here either." Arlington stuck her hands in her jeans pockets. "I'm going to get food. I'll be right back, k?" she hoped Bree wouldn't think she was trying to ditch her.

message 164: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree nodded. "Go for it," she said, smiling. "I brought my own food, so I'll just be here." Bree held up a leftover cookie from the night before that she'd nicked from the cookie jar (yes, they actually had a cookie jar) right before she left for school.

message 165: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin nodded, "See you in a bit!" She went through the line as quickly as possible (not as quickly as she would have liked, because some guy in front of her took too long deciding between an apple and a pear), and headed back to their table.

message 166: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree ate her cookie while Arlington was gone, and when she came back, Bree smiled again. "So what have you been doing?" she asked, finishing off her cookie. Her mother made the best chocolate chip cookies, she decided.

message 167: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin sat down, her tray in front of her. "Today? Class." she made a face. "But whatever, it's halfway through the day and then we get to go home. And do homework." Another face. She shook her head and picked up her apple.

message 168: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree laughed. "Yeah, that's true," she said, picking up her last cookie. "Especially math. Math is horrible." Bree pretended to shudder, smiling. She took a bite of her cookie, vaguely wondering what her next class was.

message 169: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlington nodded in agreement. "Math sucks and I hate it." she declared. "What do you have next?" She spoke between bites of apple, incredibly impolite, but she honestly didn't care much.

message 170: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Math, I think," Bree said before taking a bite of her cookie. "What about you? I know we have last period together." Bree smiled, vaguely remembering yesterday. What a way to start a friendship... She thought to herself.

message 171: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin made a face at the mention of math. "Right after we're complaining about it, how lovely." she said with a laugh. She took a sip of her chocolate milk. "English. Not as bad as math."

message 172: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Hey I'm actually fairly decent at English," Bree said with a laugh. "I wish I had that class next. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the subject-that-shall-not-be-named." Bree said, faking another shudder and smiling.

message 173: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "English is better. I'm sorry for your math-having self." Alrin said, laughing. She laughed at Bree's dramatics. "Well, I hope you don't die over there. Though it's a possibility, I think I'd miss you a little bit if you died on me."

message 174: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Only a little?" Bree pretended to pout. "I thought you'd miss me more." Bree laughed, waving off the pretend hurt. "I hope I don't die either. That would suck."

message 175: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "Okay, a lot." Arlington admitted, smiling. "Dying would suck a lot. I can't imagine it's very fun, either." She shook her head, picking up a chicken nugget.

message 176: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree eyed the lunch food in Arlington's hand. "That looks diseased," she laughed, faking a look of disgust. "How do you eat the lunch food?" Bree took a large bite of her cookie.

message 177: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlington scrutinized the nugget in her hand before shrugging and popping it into her mouth. "With lots of practice," she said once she'd swallowed. "You kind of get used to it after a while."

message 178: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "I bet," laughed Bree. "I could never scarf the stuff down. My parents made my lunches all my childhood. From sixth grade onwards, I made my own." Bree finished off the last of her cookie. "I feel sorry for those who've suffered from the horrors of school lunch food..."

message 179: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "Well, lucky you." Arlin said, laughing. "It is... kind of horrible. But it's easier than making my own lunch." She shrugged, eating another chicken nugget. "At least it's filling."

message 180: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Yeah, that is true," said Bree, digging out her sandwich. "Homemade stuff is pretty good, though, you've got to admit." Bree took a bite, thankful that her mother had been kind enough to make Bree a sandwich instead of having Bree make her own.

message 181: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments ?

message 182: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "Oh, of course!" Arlin agreed, "Nothing beats homemade food. My grandma makes amazing lunches, I wish she lived closer so she could make lunch for me." Arlin grinned, showing she was joking, and drank some more milk.

message 183: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "What's she like?" Bree asked, setting her sandwich on her lap and brushing her hands off on the sides of her thighs. She was genuinely curious what Arlington's family was like.

message 184: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "She's really great. Best grandma ever." Arlington paused, trying to figure out how to describe her. "I don't know, she's like... Really comforting, you know?"

message 185: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Sounds like McKay," Bree said, smiling at the thought of a kind old lady giving Arlington a hug. "He was always there whenever I needed him." Bree instantly fought back the memories that threatened to appear.

message 186: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin nodded, scooting a little closer to Bree and putting her arm around her shoulders. "It's okay." she said quietly, not needing to ask what Bree was doing.

message 187: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree's hand absentmindedly went up to take Arlington's. "Thanks..." she said softly, smiling genuinely. Bree got so lost in the moment, she wasn't really sure she wanted this small thing to end...

message 188: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin squeezed the tips of Bree's fingers, just to let the other girl know she was there for her. Arlin hated to see other people hurting, especially when she happened to like them...quite a bit.

message 189: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree squeezed back, relishing the feeling of - technically - holding another girl's hand. Finally she let her hand drop, not wanting Arlin to get creeped out. "So," she said, chasing memories away as she spoke, "It sounds like your family is kind of awesome."

message 190: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin shrugged, moving her arms from around Bree's shoulders. She didn't want to make Bree uncomfortable by remaining too close for too long; she didn't know where Bree's boundaries were, after all. "Yeah, they're pretty great. I love them, anyway."

message 191: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Yeah, they sound a lot better than mine," Bree laughed, glancing at the floor a bit shyly. "Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but... They're just not the most accepting people, you know?" Bree looked back up at Arlington, trying to get a good look at her features without creeping her out.

message 192: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I think I get it. It can't be easy for you." She but her lower lip, not sure of what else to say.

message 193: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments Bree took a deep breath and sighed. "Oh well," she said, putting on a smile, "Not much you can do, I guess." she finished her food and threw away the trash in the trash can placed just to her left.

message 194: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "I wish I could, though." Arlin said, finishing off her lunch before tossing it into the trash as well. "If there's anything I can do, let me know, okay?"

message 195: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "I will," Bree grinned. "Thanks. Seriously. It feels good to have a friend again." She stood and then crouched over to pick up her things.

message 196: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlington nodded. "I'm glad I can be a friend," she said, and grabbed her own things. "I'll see you in class later?"

message 197: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Yeah, of course," Bree said. "I have a backpack to trip over, don't I?" she asked playfully.

message 198: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) Arlin shook her head, laughing. "You're not going to let me forget that, are you?" she asked.

message 199: by StellaBlue (new)

StellaBlue (thatgingertho) | 574 comments "Only in your dreams, Arlin," Bree teased, right as the bell rang for students to get to class. Bree waved at Arlington as she started to walk away. "See you!" she called out over her shoulder.

message 200: by Ema (new)

Ema (gee-fiera) "It was worth a shot." Arlington shrugged, making sure she had all her things before heading off to class. "See you later!"

((time skip?))
