Naturally, the Fire Child had a lot of live up to and it didn't quite equal the brilliance of its predecessor, but it was still pretty good. It was a bit slow to get going, but it did start to build and I couldn't predict the final twist!
The only thing that let me down was that the premise was basically a carbon copy of Rebecca. I would be okay with it if it was like an homage - Rebecca itself is like a modern-day Jane Eyre, but I couldn't tell if that's what the author had intended (it's not in the synopsis or anything like that). Basically there's a woman who has fallen for, and quickly married, an enigmatic older man. She falls in love with his huge house down in Cornwall, but lives in the shadow of his deceased first wife. Admittedly it takes a vastly different direction, and as I said, the twist was brilliant, but not a great start.
I don't normally look out for new releases unless they're by an author I particularly like. Since becoming a more active reader I've become a lot more aware of new releases which has led me to buying some, but otherwise I tend to just pick up what takes my fancy.
