AlegnaB † (alegnab) I was at my local public library today, and I saw some Signet and Zebra regencies for sale. I keep a list of some authors who write clean regencies, so I bought seven books by authors on my list. However, there were other authors, and I'd like to know if they wrote clean romances:

Laura Matthews
Anne Barbour
Emily Hendrickson
Marjorie Farrell
Edith Layton
Elisabeth Fairchild
Shirley Kennedy
Megan Daniel
Eileen Putman
Joy Reed
Jean Ewing
Patricia Oliver
Nancy Butler
Jessie Watson

Thanks for any help you can give.

QNPoohBear | 49 comments This site lists all the old Regencies by author. The Signet and Zebra books are mostly clean. Around 2000 they start to get a little more sensual. There are some exceptions though like Mary Balough. Here is my kisses only shelf you can cross-reference the authors you're interested in.

From your list:
Laura Matthews - I think not always
Anne Barbour - yes kisses only
Emily Hendrickson -yes kisses only
Marjorie Farrell - I don't know
Edith Layton - never read a full-length novel but her Christmas stories are clean
Elisabeth Fairchild - the one book I read was too sensual for my tastes
Shirley Kennedy - the one book I read was clean
Megan Daniel - unknown to me
Eileen Putman -unknown to me
Joy Reed -yes
Jean Ewing - unknown to me
Patricia Oliver - unknown to me
Nancy Butler - might be sensual. A Merry Wanderer has a more than chaste kissing scene
Jessie Watson - kisses only

AlegnaB † (alegnab) Thanks. I'll be able to pick up a few more this week, if they're still at the library.

Lyuda Patricia Oliver - great author- kisses only
Jean Ewing- more than kisses
Edith Layton- great author- kisses only
Marjory Farrell- more than kisses
If you like clean traditional regencies try Joan Smith.

AlegnaB † (alegnab) Thanks! I went back to the library and bought 38 regencies. It will take me quite a while to get through them.

QNPoohBear | 49 comments Wow that's awesome! My state library system has a lot of the Zebra and Signet books in their collection. I've picked up a few at my city library's book sales and at a thrift store. I checked yesterday at the thrift store and only found one but didn't buy it.

Joan Smith's plots are hit or miss for me. My favorite authors are Barbara Metzger, Regina Scott, Judith Lansdowne and Carola Dunn.

Camy (camytang) | 44 comments I just remembered that Sheila Simonson wrote several very clean Regencies. I've read two of them and loved them both, so I'm anxious to read more from her.

She didn't write that many. Only three I think, but they're good ones.

AlegnaB † (alegnab) I went to the library a few days ago and picked up 24 more. I haven't even read any of the ones I picked up last month, so maybe I shouldn't look anymore. Nah. I'm going to the library today, and I'll probably look again, unless I'm in a hurry. Since I cleaned off half of a shelf, I'm sure someone has added more books. Library volunteers are constantly adding books, since the library gets so many donations, especially of romances.

Carol Storm (lilybits) | 3 comments Patricia Oliver was an awesome Regency author but her stories were not totally innocent. The mood was often very steamy and sensual, but the sex was implied. For example in LORD GRESHAM'S LADY the hero gives the heroine a guest room and there's a mirror on the ceiling. Her little girl has no idea why it's there but the heroine get the message right away!

Kim | 4 comments All Elizabeth Cole's are totally clean. One of her novellas Scandal at Dawn with a blind heroine is free right now on Amazon for a taste of her work.

message 12: by AlegnaB † (new)

AlegnaB † (alegnab) I bought three more at the library. Anyone know anything about Martha Kirkland's old regencies? There were several of her books there, but I didn't get them.

Thanks, Kim. I got the novella.

Camy (camytang) | 44 comments I like Martha Kirkland! Most of her stories are entertaining. I can't remember her sensuality levels, though.

I also read and reviewed this delightful story and just recently discovered it had been formerly titled Love is Blind.

Jeffrey (chiklitmanfan) I'm just now getting to the last story in an excellent collection of 9 short stories entitled British Brides. The are faith-based, sweet, clean romances from the 1300's to the present. Light easy reading.

Edith Layton. She is "cleanish" but there are some books that skates the line. Its not always the main couple mind you.In The Duke's Wager there is a flashback scene thats a bit risky.

As for the main couples its mostly kissing but she had this talent for make you feel the emotions really simmering beneath the Surface.

But she is one of the greats of trad regency so I would recommend her books..

As for Joan Smith(one of my favorite authors) I guess clean too but I remember in Reprise, sequel to Imprudent Lady there is this scene where the hero ask if she is ready to take on her "wifely duties" and she replies something on the lines that she guess she can clean and oversee the house.

And he is like "...right"

I dont think thats what he meant. lol

Linore (linrose) | 5 comments I can't tell you which of those authors write clean regencies...but I can tell you that I have. Right now, in fact, my regency trilogy with Harvest House Publishers is on sale on Amazon or wherever ebooks are sold. Limited time only (Sale ends 9/26). They are clean, clean, clean! :) http://amzn.to/1ATNKR6

message 18: by AlegnaB † (last edited Sep 19, 2014 09:35AM) (new)

AlegnaB † (alegnab) Thanks, Linore. I purchased them. I've seen them on sale before (I recognized the covers) but didn't buy them. Since they weren't free, I just scrolled right by them.

message 19: by Linore (new)

Linore (linrose) | 5 comments Well, thank you Alegna! Hopefully you'll consider this small investment to have been well worth it! :)

message 20: by AlegnaB † (new)

AlegnaB † (alegnab) Linore, I've read the first two and enjoyed them. I wrote reviews, so feel free to take a look at them.

message 21: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Sheridan | 8 comments Eizabeth Mansfield also wrote clean Regencies. The only historical with any real sex in it was "To Spite the Devil" and that's not a Regency; it takes place in colonial America (and even that isn't explicit at all).

Her out of print books are being released as eBooks from Open Road and are available through all online booksellers.

Carol Storm (lilybits) | 3 comments Don't forget Dawn Lindsey's super clean Regencies set in Scotland, such as REBEL LADY and AN INDEPENDENT WOMAN.

I should point out that only my Regency Rhapsody series is sweet/clean. The Secrets of the Zodiac series is sexy/steamy. I don't want to confuse anyone hoping for one thing and getting the other!
