Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I am looking for books set on Sark, Herm and Alderney if anyone has any recommendations.

Available on kindle please and Preferably not horror or poetry

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12611 comments Wow, that might be a challenge, Sark and Herm are so tiny I'm not sure what you could set there

message 53: by David (new)

David Hadley There is the connection between Sark and Gormenghast Gormenghast (Gormenghast, #2) by Mervyn Peake .

Apparently, Peake also wrote a book called Mr Pye Mr Pye by Mervyn Peake which is set on Sark.

I'd never heard of it until recently. Now I see it is available for £2.99 at Amazon, so I've just bought it.

Pam Baddeley | 3336 comments I only read it years ago because of that TV series starring Derek Jacobi - although I'd read the Gormenghast trilogy, I hadn't heard of Mr Pye either.

I'm about halfway through it and I'm not sure what I think of it, yet. I certainly don't think it is as good as the Gormenghast books.

In the end it turned out quite good, but, no, not like Gormenghast.

Wow, what a brilliant journey you must have been on! I've visited nearly all of Britain's counties over the years, this seems like a good follow-up. Great idea. :)

Reading for this challenge has been a little slower recently - I've still not started any books set in N.Ireland, but I have a few ready to start.

I've ticked a few more counties in England, and have books ready for another two. I'm left with two that I still need to decide on. There seem to be plenty of books set in Berkshire that I could choose from but the final county is Huntingdonshire, and I'm struggling to find any from there.

I have some more to choose from for Scotland and Wales so will see which counties are left.

I can see that this challenge will be continuing for quite a while.

Some of the others I have an idea of what I intend reading - for example I have some by Christina McKenna on my wishlist for some N Ireland counties, but haven't bought or downloaded to my kindle yet.

Thanks Jud, I will have a good look through that site.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I've still not finished but as I have read a few books that are set in the Republic of Ireland over the last couple of years I have added those counties to this challenge. I will go through the list and add the books later

message 75: by Jemima (new)

Jemima Pett | 48 comments The trouble with using the Scottish counties is that I tend to think in the 'new' regions these days. I have some MG stories set in Argyle and Bute, and Helen Laycock's books are set all over the country too. I presume you've covered Lothian with an Edinburgh book.

Are you including non-fiction?

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Jemima wrote: "The trouble with using the Scottish counties is that I tend to think in the 'new' regions these days. I have some MG stories set in Argyle and Bute, and Helen Laycock's books are set all over the c..."

yes I've read a book set in Edinburgh and no I'm not intending to include non-fiction.

I'm going to cheat slightly with some of the Welsh counties - not having much success in tracking down books set in some of the counties that are:-
on kindle
reasonably priced (ie not 8.99 or more!!! - preferably much less) or on kindle unlimited
available in paperback (again for a reasonable price)
not poetry or horror
by an author that I have already read or liked
and finally - something that I think I would read and enjoy.

So I have a series of books of Welsh Folk Tales and will tick off the counties after I have read any short story from these books that is set in those counties.

message 77: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I think for the more obscure counties you should be allowed to tick it off if it is mentioned or visited in the book rather than set in it.

message 78: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments or maybe you are already doing that.
