Shelf #6 ~ 22/6/14: 'Reader's Choice'
Left Drowning by Jessica Park
Book:
Left Drowning by Jessica Park
Read: June 23
Rating & Review: ★ or ★★. I despised the H/h.
Such a pathetic girl chasing after a douchebag like he is the cat's meow made me wanna throw up.

Blythe McGuire is going through the motion of college, trying her best not to let her depression get the best of her. Blythe and her brother James lost their parents in a tragedy and the loss threw her in a tailspin.

Blythe's senior year she met Christopher Shepherd, a guy who seemed to understand and share her pain. Chris also lost his mother in a tragic accident and these two lonely hearts connected...or so Blythe thought.
See Chris told Blythe he doesn't do relationships, and Blythe thought she could handle the friends with benefits. But feelings emerged as they often do in these types of relationships. What will Blythe do when she knows Christopher isn't the "settling down" type?

My issue with this book was that Blythe was (besides being generally pathetic) emotionally all over the place. First of all, Blythe would tell Chris she wasn't looking for a boyfriend or a commitment, but in the next sentence, she would say that her and Chris are so connected. Blythe said she didn't believe in marriage, next breath Chris and my time will come. She was just so emotionally unstable. I felt like she couldn't tell lust from love.
Christopher was such a douchebag. He was a liar and a cheat, his reasons just were not good enough for his behavior.
Blythe's chasing after someone who was supposed to be a friend and treated her so callously, when she claimed she had grown stronger just perplexed me. He was just a user and bad guy to me. A lot of people had abusive parents but they don't treat people and lie by omission like he did. His behavior was appalling and disrespectful of a friendship.

I am so thankful I read Flat Out Love, Flat out Matt or I would have thought this author was a mediocre writer. Her characters in this book were not developed well and hard to like. I was truly disappointed with this one.

Yay - still have a hard time with the timeline on these books. I think I just have to throw that right out the window - this one is taking place as the Lachlain and Emmaline's book - which was #2 - still good though so far

Red Fox (Experiment in Terror, #2) by Karina Halle by Karina Halle
Finished: 6/24/14
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review:

Dex and Perry are headed to Red Fox, New Mexico for their second show. After a marginal success with the first show, this is a make it or break it type of deal. The Lancasters are being haunted by something. They have wild animals (foxes, crows, coyotes) running through their house, their sheep are being massacred, stones are raining down on their home and 2 men were attacked.

Even though I'm not to that obsessive stage with this series, I can see why it's so addictive. It has some really spooky stuff happening, sexual tension, and a cray-cray character. That would be Dex. I'm not sure what's going on with Perry yet, but she has power of some kind. She dreams about things and has a connection to the ghosts. So far, both books have been a little predictable and there were a few TSTL moments but I still enjoyed them. I can see the appeal. It started off pretty damn scary too. I will still continue with the series but I haven't been bitten with the Ihavetoreadthenextlikenow bug, yet.

Loving Luki Vasquez (Vasquez & James, #1) by Lou Sylvre
Finished 6/24/14 4♥

Review: This had a slow start/build up of a friendship into a lovers relationship. Both Sonny and Luki have gone without developing relationships with others. Luki is used to one night stands and walking away. Sonny has found it easier not to start in the first place due to his nephew. Mystery starts when their friends house is broken into and vandalized by teenagers. Where Luki thinks the mystery is revolved around Sonny when really it all revolves around Luki's past. That took longer for Luki to figure out than I was expecting. This was sweet - not too much angst or too many stupid moments. I'll be interested to see what happens with Sonny's nephew Delsyn in the next book.

UnWholly (Unwind, #2) by Neal Shusterman
Finished: 26/6/14
Stars: 4.5
Review:
I'm amazed I was able to keep putting this down to keep up with other books in my challenges as once I dedicated time to it this was highly addictive. It was interesting to watch as things alluded to in the first book came to passage and hints dropped early in the book took shape. There were twists, turns and shocks that kept my turning pages!

message 368: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments I'll be going back to City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare for the green cover now. It's been a tough read as its not grabbing me. Anyone else read the mortal instruments series? Thoughts? Is it just me?

Nichole | 1199 comments I just wanted to remind you that I will be on vacation 6/27-7/6. I'm not sure if I'll be able to check in before the 3rd though. I'll have my phone but I'll have to be sneaky because my Mother-in-Law gets pissy if she thinks I'm playing. Reading time will be limited as well :( I already talked to Sandra about this and she said if it was a winning shelf week that someone could take my place. Otherwise, I will catch up as soon as I get back.

Dead in the Water (Daisy Dalrymple, #6) by Carola Dunn

3-4 stars.

These are light, entertaining reads. I like that they are written in 3rd person when most cozies, in my experience, are 1st person. I love the 1920's setting. I also like that she progresses the main character's social lives w/o having it take over from the mysteries. I hate love triangles that never resolve themselves and there's none of that here. I docked it about a star for being a little predictable. I figured the killer out pretty quickly and would have liked that to be a bit more challenging.

message 377: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Thanks!! We're just going to Branson, so nothing fancy, but it will still be fun. We got a cabin on Table Lake, rented a boat and MiL is paying for it :) I actually have a pretty great MIL. However, she gets cranky pants if anyone spends any time on their phone-unless they are making needed calls, Kindle-unless it's right before bed or with coffee for a few minutes, and so on. I'll have a few (ha, hundreds on the kindle) books with me so hopefully I can check in and at least read a little. I might even be able to post a small review Fri/Sat.

message 378: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments @Nichole ~ have you been to Branson before? I ask because DH keeps bringing it up for a road trip for us to take. I've never been and not sure what there is to do there?

Do you have kids that could maybe distract dear MIL for a *short* while so you could get some reading time in,lol. I'd be in withdrawal :D

message 379: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments My first time to Branson, so I'll be sure to highlight things when I get back :) I don't have kids, unfortunately, but my SiL has a 13 year old boy. They are just really active and we always have a blast playing games, enjoying the lake, and just hanging out. There's usually very little down time though. I will be having withdrawal! I get cranky too, lol. I will squeeze some reading in as often as I can.

message 381: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments Enjoy your time away Nichole! I hope you get in a little reading time :)

I've updated and requested our readers choice stamp. I'll be finished my book for the green cover in the next day or so, that'll make us up to date.

I've also chosen Time Untime (Hellchaser, #5; Were-Hunter #9; Dark-Hunter, #21) by Sherrilyn Kenyon for my free space read from the PNR list. I'll be taking that on the train with me to Melbourne tomorrow to pass the time until I get to the craft show. Can't wait! There's always so much to see, do and learn!

Sandra | 25912 comments Enjoy the holiday Nichole!!

Enjoy the craft show Belinda, is it the big annual one? I've sworn off going to the Sydney equivalent the last couple of years. I've got enough craft stuff to last me for 20 yrs at least :D

message 384: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments I've got enough stuff too but it's so much fun! It's the craft and quilt show so it quite big.

message 385: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I've been really in the mood to get back to into crafts but I haven't been able to because of an impending remodel of my house that is finally starting next week. I've only managed to work a little here and there on a needlepoint tapestry of a peacock.

message 388: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments Ezi - there was the stats in the discussion thread - there's 11% of winning call this week. Several teams are in our position

Mary - the peacock would be really pretty! Long stitch or cross stitch? I'm working on a cute cross stitch of 3 puppies in a washing basket. It's taken me years!! Only because I don't do it regularly....

Thanks. I didn't see it but that's cool. I am good for whatever

message 390: by Mary X (last edited Jun 27, 2014 04:18PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I thought there was only 1 other team with 4 in a row on that update. But lots with 3. I'll go double check.

Yes the peacock is coming out quite nice. I just haven't had much time to work on it lately. I have to pack up a lot of my house and put it into storage for this remodel. It's about 3' x 6' and done on rug canvas with tapestry wool in a X stitch. I'm going to finish it as a wall hanging with the loops and a wood or metal pole through the top to hang. My mother will have to help me finish it as I don't quite know how.

eta: I have a thing for peacocks and I plan on having my new bedroom done in a light teal so that's where I'll hang when it's done.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments This is what Rachel-Goodbye Borders posted the other day after the last shelf call.

Here a nice (at least I think so!) breakdown:
The following teams have at least 3 in a row (once all stamped received).
2 winning shelves: Urban Fantasy and PNR
18 shelves left in play; 11% chance of winning shelf call next week
Only 4 shelves do not give a team 4 in a row: White/Beige/Pink, Vampires, Hit the Road, and Armed & Ready

Team 1: 4th row: Blue/Purple and Favorite

Team 3: 5th row: New2You Author and Missing Persons
Diagonal: New2You Series and Headless H/h

Team 4: 4th row: New2You Series and Witches
"G:" Red Cover and Romance Genre

Team 5: 4th row: PNR
Diagonal: New2You Series and Missing Persons

Team 6: Diagonal: Black Cover and PNR
5th Row: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and Headless H/h

Team 7: 1st Row: Favorite and Urban Fantasy
3rd Row: Red Cover and Black Cover

Team 8: "B:" Urban Fantasy
Diagonal: Witches and Black Cover

Team 10: Diagonal #1: Red Cover and Witches
Diagonal #2: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and Favorite

Sandra | 25912 comments Congrats on the stamp D8tWs!

Yep, that's the show I was thinking of Belinda :)

Mary, the peacock sounds lovely :) I've done quite a few cross-stitches of dragons & castles, plus lots of other stuff.

message 397: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I used to do a lot of cross stitching. I kind of got out of it because after awhile you run out of places to hang stuff and people to give pictures to who may not always appreciate the gift. I found you can't really sell them for enough to cover the time and effort put into them.

message 398: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25912 comments Exactly Mary, that was my problem as well.

They do well as Christmas ornaments though, both on the tree and around the house. And those you can give and get appreciated for, probably cause they only come out at christmas time.

message 399: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 801 comments I've got a drawer full of old long stitch I did as a kid. Mum gave up trying to display them all!
