Sherri | 781 comments Sorry guys. Life shit has happened to me again.

Here's a photo of my car which was broken into last night at the golf course. they stole my purse, which I had just purchased and was super awesome and also had my kindle, ipad, prescription glasses and Sea of Shadows.

Only saving grace was I had taken my phone and wallet out so now it is just dealing with getting the car fixed and the stuff replaced. My poor insurance agent is getting a workout this year.

Kimberly (gravy) | 530 comments Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh
Shelf: Red Cover
Finished: 5 June
Rating: 4 stars

I'm at a loss for what to say.
Raphael is a bad ass and I let his arrogance slide because he has wings. I know. I'm ashamed of myself for acting like one of the star struck civilians that sees an angel flying overhead. Elena was great. She had a backbone and didn't let anyone tell her what to do. She and Sara were funny. The side characters were great and played off the main characters well. The Seven! The Ten! Three more and we could make it an even Twenty!

I still have questions about Elena's family. Her dad is a piece of work. Does he like his daughter or doesn't he? I don't get him and the point of him.
Slater Patalis, WTH? Maybe I didn't catch the real importance of him being mentioned. Yes, I know what he did to Elena's mom and sister, but I feel like there was something else about him that wasn't explained.

I think all the questions I have about this book just means that I need to read the next few books to see what happens. That and Dmitri's book is #4!

Sandra | 25908 comments Accidentally Dead (Accidentals, #2) by Dakota Cassidy
Shelf #7: Red Cover
Date: 7/7/14
Rating: ★★★

Book 2 in the Accidentally Friends series.

Nina, best friend of Marty the new werewolf, is a potty-mouth dental hygienist whose first day on the job turns her into a vampire.

Nina complained that Marty whinged about her werewolfness in the previous book, but Nina complained and whinged and was the Queen of Denial about her vampness.

This series is funny, lets face it they get their info from Wiki and romance novels, but Nina was a bit too mean to Greg. Greg is her unwitting Sire and very hot and very nice and very forgiving. Nina was starting to show some growth by the end of the book so that bodes well for the rest of the series.

Next time I want light and fluffy I'll read the next one in the series.

Sandra | 25908 comments Boyfriend from Hell (Saturn's Daughter, #1) by Jamie Quaid
Shelf #8: Hit the Road
Date: 9/7/14
Rating: ★★★★

This is a very quirky, hard edged novel. I was quite intrigued with this book but I never felt entirely comfortable and that could have been the intention of Ms Quaid. Nothing is as it seems at first glance in the Zone.

Tina Clancy's boyfriend Max has been flaking off lately and when he comes screaming down the hill straight at Clancy in her car, she thinks he is trying to kill her. She damns him to hell and that's where he ends up.

The book is set in Baltimore's radio-active Zone, which reminds me slightly of Kate Daniels' Atlanta. The ACME Chemical Company had a dangerous accident 20 or 30 yrs ago and strange things are starting to happen in the Zone. Both to things and people.

Clancy has had a very hard life with a hippie mother who moved them all over the place and no dad or other family. Turns out that Clancy is a Daughter of Saturn which means she is a Justice Demon. She just doesn't know that yet. And living and working in the Zone has enhanced her vigilante skills. She goes to school doing law and works part-time for Andre, doing his accountancy and banking. Andre owns lots of businesses in the Zone and employs lots of people. Almost like the mob.

This was a who dunnit with paranormal overtones, lots of action, spies, political implications and corrupt authorities, and a cute kitty.

Clancy learns that she does indeed have friends and she doesn't need to always rely solely on herself.

Judithe | 6566 comments Hooray on that, Sherri!

I've gotten an unexpected holiday due to some baaaaaaaaaaaad weather, so while catching up on work projects, I also hope to finish my book.

Interesting to read Outcast Season...with Mother Earth throwing a hissy fit, as Mother Earth has been sending us lots of fun things this week. Count as of now is earthquake (tiny here), typhoon (now, theoretically tiny, but DANG...it's wet and I can barely open my front door!) and to top it off...tornado warning this morning. In Japan. (Tornadoes are a VERY recent phenomenon here...in a country where the majority of homes have absolutely no basement/storm shelter...)

Tornadoes in Japan????? That doesn't sound very good at all, especially with such a densely populated land area. Stay safe!!!

Judithe | 6566 comments They're usually smaller than what we see on the news from the states, but scary. That warning is lifted though! Just a very blustery day now!

Did finish my story! Yay, the human race & the planet survived. Review later...back to work until the family appears wanting food (fridge is stocked with DIY stuff...just need to wave the director's wand and fend off questions!)

The Mermaid's Madness by Jim C. Hines
Shelf: On The Road
Date Finished: 7/12/14
Rating: 4 Stars

If you've ever owned (or wanted to own) one of those "self rescuing princess" t-shirts then this is the series for you. The continuing adventures of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty & Snow White (or Danielle, Talia & um, Snow) continue here. I love the men aren't belittled here to make the women seem strong, it's just that it happens to be the women's story so the men are competent but secondary characters. While the last book was basically Danielle's story here we learn a little more about Talia background and Snow's childhood. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses and while it's tempting to short hand "if Disney princesses could kick ass", they actually owe more to the original source material than Disney.

The tale up in this one is The Little Mermaid and I have to admit that it's not a favorite of mine. Although I think Hines makes interesting use of it here, questioning this Disney fairy tale of the HEA with someone you've known a week. I haven't seen it yet but I think Frozen also pointed out the absurdity of this as well. Of course it's romantic in a book or movie but real life needs a little more caution. As Lirea (nice anagram there) finds out, her prince is actually a jerk and while she starts as the bad guy here it comes to light that she was really just a young woman who made a foolish choice and was manipulated and exploited by others.

Lest this seem to dark, these are not fairy tale Game of Thrones. Again, they are just closer to Grimm's than to Disney's version of these stories. As with everything I've read by Hines, there's a lightness to the writing and a humor in the dialogue that keeps even a dark subject from being too much. There is dark stuff, they are fairy tale princesses their childhoods and backstories are nothing you would want. But it's off screen and referred to in the past, they are currently kick ass princesses who use their physical and magical gifts for their kingdom. It's a good series for anyone who likes fairy tale retellings, women kicking butt & some humor.

Thoughts:

This is the finale of Outcast Season, a spin-off of the Weather Warden Series. Cassiel is a Djinn who has been exiled to live among mortals. The reason, she wouldn't destroy the human race to stop another powerful Djinn that has become strong enough from gathering human energy to take on Mother Earth herself. Cassiel had no great love for humanity, but has learned the magic of relationships and love though those who aid her in her quest to stop Pearl, but in the end, she may not be able to save those she must protect and has come to love.

I read the first three quite a while ago and put off reading this one...until I read it, the series hadn't really ended. It was a very satisfying and dramatic finish. As I seem to be on a series re-read binge this year, may add this one to that list (or it AND Weather Warden....) It was an interesting choice in a week that saw a typhoon, a few earthquakes and a tornado in my corner of the world....

This was a cute read. Jazz and Nick were fun to read about, but I would have liked to know a little more of their back story. I still don't know what happened at Clive's mansion in 1932. I still don't know, but can kind of figure out why Nick had Jazz locked up for a month. What did Jazz and her classmates do to get them banished from school all those years ago?
The mystery of what happened to all the missing vampires and who did it was predictable. I didn't like the fact that a main side character was one of the missing and his demise was glossed over. That's pretty much how a majority of the side characters were treated in the book. You meet them and they sound intriguing but you don't get much more from them past when they were first mentioned. Speaking of side characters, Irma, the ghost that inhabits Jazz car, is annoying and it doesn't look like she's going away.

This is a different supe mix to the usual Keri Arthur tale. This one is Fae, Dragons, Sirens, Ogres, Trolls etc.

I liked the characters & the plot and want to read more, however, did feel a little underdone or perhaps a bit like her early work. And I loved the Aussie slang, don't worry she gives a glossary at the beginning.

Harriet (Harrie) is half elf/half siren and not recognised by her elf family. She was a photojournalist but has recently become a PI and gets hired by her uncle Lyle to find his missing love Mona the siren. This case quickly turns into murder when Mona's body is washed ashore.

Harrie has lots of friends and they are all needed to keep her alive and help her sort out who killed Mona.

I hope KA writes more Harrie Phillecki tales as I want to see what happens with Kaij, Harrie's ex, who is back after 10 yrs and now working for supe law enforcement.

Book: Spider’s Revenge by Jennifer Estep
Shelf: Armed & Ready
Date Finished: 7/13/14
Rating: 4 Stars

As usual, I loved the story and characters but the repetition drove me a little crazy. It seemed a bit better in this book but that could also be that the story really swept me along (went through it in a day) so I just might not have noticed. For anyone who's read the series it's been leading up to the big confrontation between Gin and Mab. And that did not disappoint. There were a lot of skirmishes leading up to it and they did a lot to show just how strong Mab is. I like that Gin's been fighting progressively stronger enemies in each book. It shows how much her strength and skills have been growing since the beginning.

I'm also a sucker for the "loner learns they really do have a family" storyline and that's in spades here. We learn more about Jo Jo and Sophia and their connection with Fletcher. Gin and Bria connect in a very emotional scene. And Owen stands up for her as well in a big way. Finn is fun as always and there's a big scene with everyone that nearly made me cry (don't want to do a spoiler so that's all I'll say).

I think this would be a 5* series for me if it weren't for the repetition. I don't mind book to book, I know that it must be difficult to bring new readers up to speed (jumping into a UF series at book 5 - I shudder to think about it). It's more the repetition within the book. Other reviews point it out in more detail but for me it speaks to the strength of the characters and the world building that I still give these 4 stars and look forward to reading them. I don't think I could do it on audio, writing weaknesses stand out way more for me that way, but and the end of the day I read for enjoyment and entertainment, not for literary critique. Since I enjoy and am entertained by this series I'll continue to look forward to Gin's adventures.

Thoughts:
This is the 5th book in the fantastic Kate Daniels series. I love this and have been rereading the series since the month started. I usually try to pick up a new one rather than a reread for the BINGO shelves, but sometimes I just can't help myself. Besides, Kate is ALWAYS Armed & Ready!

Book 5. Kate is in a drastically different place than she was in Book 1, but some things never change. She never needs to go out looking for it...trouble always finds her. This time, it starts with a call from Ghastek about a runaway vampire...and ends with a dramatic fight...two actually, defeat the bad guys and save the child...with a ton of riveting adventure, great conversation and some steamy moments. The chemistry between Kate and Curran is smoking as always, and I love how they are growing and adapting to and with each other.

I will absolutely read the next one, and the next, and the next....Bye. Got one in my hands at the moment and can no longer resist...also trying not to count down the hours to release day of #7, Magic Breaks...(confession...with the hardcover switch, the first release day price, even for the Kindle is up...and I'm trying to tell myself to be sensible and wait a bit...I could buy two books for that price. But not sure whether the greedy inner child or budget-minded adult will win in the end...maybe have to distract the GIC with another reread of another favorite series)
