THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS takes place in Australia. Tom returns from WWI and trains to be a lighthouse keeper. He is assigned to Janus Rock, 100 miles offshore. He meets and marries isabel, a younger, vibrant woman. She seems to love Janus, but after suffering 3 misscarriages she is depressed and devastated.

A small rowboat washes up on the island and part of the cargo is a small baby. and Isabel and Tom are at odds over what to do about it. The book is beautifully written and brings strong emotions to the pages of the story.

The characters are well developed, and the women in the story (Isabel and later Hannah) can be both extremely likeable and also detested. The book ends quickly and sadly, but we do get to see what happened with the person described as the "light" between the two oceans where Janus Rock was positioned.

i saw the movie a few days after I finished the book and while the other ladies with me said the movie was slow and a little long, it did follow the book closely and it was interesting to me to see the characters "come to life". I really enjoyed the character of Isabel (Alicia Vikander), whose facial expressions fit in exactly with the different parts of the story.

Book and movie equally great (usually the book is better). I can recommend both but I would say read the book first!

Hahtoolah | 496 comments I read the book and really enjoyed it. I was looking forward to the movie. I saw the movie over the weekend. It followed the book fairly closely, but I found it slow. The book held my interest. The movie did not.

I gave it 3 stars, torn between the quality of writing and what I thought of the story, protagonist, etc. I don't want to see it because I don't want to revisit the story of her keeping the baby.
