Announcement: New link on book edit page to address recent caching issues

I'm afraid I don't understand the "all" in this. A change in the title should not apply to all editions of a work. A change in the author should not apply to all editions of a work. Cover images do not apply to all editions of a work.

LOL - I think I should have understood that, but once misunderstood, my brain refused to move on to the correct explanation.

First thank you and the GR team for recognizing our issues with the previously implemented caching change and working on improving it.
Are you able to give us examples of edits that will need this option.

A few sections of the book page such as "Books by this author" may not reflect changes for up to 12 hours. You can force an immediate change by clicking the “Refresh book page cache" link, or just wait for the refresh.
Note that this currently only pertains to the book page - for example, the author page itself will reflect the latest content.
It's hard to come up with a definitive list because of the variety of information on the book page. But anything you change on the book edit page should be reflected immediately. If not, let us know here and we'll do our best to rectify it.
Thanks!
Jon

Yes, the button to update the cache is on the book edit page, underneath the “Refresh book rating stats” link.
What isn’t working for you about awards, specifically? I assigned an award to a test book and saw the page updated immediately. Would you mind linking me to the specific book where this isn’t updating for you?
Thanks
Jon

It didn't update automatically as indicated in the first post of this thread. However, it did update after a few minutes. I did not time the lapse, but I was confused. I had merged awards and then went back to the book page, where the merged award was not displayed.

Thanks for the additional information! I checked into this and it turns out that, indeed, award merging is implemented in such a way that makes immediate refreshing of the affected book pages difficult. Each book page will refresh by itself given time, but if you'd prefer not to wait, you can click on the "Refresh book page cache" link on the right side of the book edit page to see the updated version immediately.
For simpler award operations -- adding an award to, or removing an award from, a work — you'll see the effects immediately without having to click the refresh link. I hope that clarifies the situation, but please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best
Jon

Thanks, Jonathan. I thought about this after I posted, and I suspect what happens is that, while the merge is immediately displayed on the award page itself, the system must go through each title individually to update the change. I think there were only 9 books on the award with the name change, so it didn't take forever (!), but not immediate.
Thanks again for checking on this, and thanks to staff for figuring out a compromise to both system and librarian needs.

The last few days I've noticed that removing a book from an author page does not immediately show, like it used to.
I know that the line above the books takes a while to update (f.e. Average rating: 0.0 · 0 ratings · 0 reviews · 2 distinct works · Similar authors -- shows 2 distinct works when there is only one), but I never saw a delay with removing the actual book entries themselves.
It now may take 10 minutes before a book disappears, which is confusing to authors who ask for those books to be removed.
Is this a temporary delay?
ETA Well! I just removed books from another author's profile, and when I added his own book to his profile the others had suddenly gone all at once. It seems to be a bit hit and miss.

I don't believe this has been true for quite some time, if ever. Clicking through to the author's book list and back to the author page sometimes forces the cache on the author page to update.

The book has gone now, but when I wrote my comment 4 hours after the OP it was still there, even with switching back and forth between author page and author book list.

Took until the next day for things to straighten out. One book stayed on the wrong author page & the other one was stuck in limbo somewhere.

This is definitely not normal.

Maybe it's a 24 hour cache, because it's there now.

Another time please start a new thread with your request; it did not belong here. Thanks!

First, we've implemented fixes to ensure that the book page updates automatically in response to most book metadata changes. Some examples include edits to titles, authors, series information, and cover images, as well as adding and removing characters, awards, settings, and chapters. The cache will be refreshed for all editions, so that each edition shows up correctly.
Since we won't be able to catch every type of change, we've created a new link for librarians that manually skips the cache and lets you and others viewing the book page see the work you’ve done. The link appears on the book edit page and reads “Refresh book page cache," directly beneath “Refresh book rating stats.” Just click on that, and updated information will appear across all editions of the book page in real time.
You shouldn’t have to click on this link for the most part, just for rare changes that aren't caught automatically. If you find yourself clicking on it for a common type of edit, let us know on this thread and we'll do our best to fix that case.
We would love your feedback on how this change impacts your workflow. Please post here with questions or concerns!
