Theo Shapiro | 20 comments I am trying to decide what book to read next. I am a fan of Tolkein and love A Song of Ice and Fire series and Harry Potter. Based on that I'm trying to decide between Blood Song and Name of the Wind. Both seem to be getting rave reviews, and I can't decide which I should start with. I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Shay | 2 comments They are very similar so either one is good.

Alexa (littlelexa) | 27 comments Hello Theo! I haven't read Blood Song (I'm not even sure which one is it, a search on goodreads gave me like 5 books with the same name) but I've read The Name of the Wind and would easily recommend it.

It's a great read, but do remember that it's an ongoing series and once you finish the two books you'll be waiting anxiously for the third one with the rest of us. :)

Kim | 1499 comments I'm guessing you mean this Blood Song? Can't say I've ever heard of it and don't know anyone who has. I can say The Name of the Wind, for me, was really good. Why not try both and let us know what you think.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments I'm reading it right now in another group. I like Blood Song a lot better than The Name of the Wind so far but I'm not too far in.

Taha Shabbir | 1 comments The Name of the Wind is excellent, but Blood Song is just more substantive. I'd suggest reading The Name of the Wind first as you might not like it as much after you read Blood Song.

Åsmund | 1 comments Haven't heard about Blood Song, but Name of the Wind is epic!!
I really recomend The name of the wind!!

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 74 comments I´m currently reading Blood Song along with MrsJ in another group. I´m about halfway through and it´s very good so far. You should be warned, however, that it has a serious need of more editing, especially regarding commas and sentence structure... just in case that kind of thing pisses you off.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 210 comments Don't think you can go wrong with either if them, both were excellent reads for my money. The sequel to Blood Sing comes out in July, I believe, so you wouldn't have very long to wait if you enjoy it.

Yeah, that's the right one. Sorry, I wasn't sure how to create that link to the actual book.

RuthAnn | 6 comments Tough decision! Both are coming of age tales and both are among some of the best books I've ever read. Flip a coin. You can't go wrong with either :)

Raivo Verk | 23 comments After so many recommendations for the Name of the Wind, what else can I do, but to recommend it as well. It's a good book and interesting.
It was a bit hard for me cause I had to stop half way through because of work, but when I finished I read the second one right on top in a couple of days..that was awesome.

And now playing the waiting came as others are.
Thanks for Blood Song though, I'll be sure to pick that up while I wait for this one.

Suzanne | 86 comments I'd never heard of Blood Song before this thread, but I loved Name of the Wind. It sounds like I really need to check out Blood Song - thanks for the recommendations!!

Theo Shapiro | 20 comments In a weird way this has been no help to me, and I'm thrilled. Usually I hear that one book isn't worth reading, but after hearing nothing but positive reviews I'm excited to read both. I think I'll start with Blood Song just cause it seems a bit more unknown, but I plan on reading both. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

message 15: by Darcy (new)

Darcy Woodring | 2 comments Both are awesome. Very different, but awesome. Name of the Wind is my favorite book. The writing is stunning, the characterization is phenomenal, and the world building is a delight. That said it's a slower read, one tang really needs to be savored. If you're looking for a simpler style and more immediate action, Blood Song might be a better choice. You really can't go wrong.

Nayeomi | 12 comments reading Blood Song because of this thread. how cool is that? already read Name of The Wind. let you guys know soon :)
ftr, Name of the Wind is really tough to beat so we will see.

message 17: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Blood Song is better. Name of the Wind is a bit too Mary Stu.

message 18: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) | 781 comments This is a tough call. I really enjoyed both books.

Name of the Wind is a magic user's story, so it focuses a lot on the protagonist's clever antics.

Blood Song is a warrior's story, so there is more action and large scale battles.

So, my recommendation is dependent on whether or not you are more in the mood for spells or blades.
