Question for the participants of this group. I am not sure how to classify by genre type a novel I am writing presently. It has people using magic, demons, angels, vampires, werewolves and dragons, along with lots of explicit sex (it will be rated 'for adults only') and will take place in modern times, mostly around Los Angeles. Should it be considered:
- a: as an erotica novel;
- b: as a mixed erotica/fantasy novel;
- c: as a fantasy novel for adults; or
- d: something entirely on its own.

I would much appreciate your various opinions on this. Thanks in advance.

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) I'd go with b (as long as it legit fits into those categories) cuz then you'd have more visibility. Plus, erotica and fantasy are both HUGE right now, eh?

Have a hug,
Ann

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments Paranormal erotica
Erotic urban fantasy

message 4: by Matthew (last edited Sep 07, 2016 06:16PM) (new)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) I'm with Tara on this one. Anything involving paranomal or magic elements that is also set in the modern day tends to fall into the genre of urban fantasy

Sola (theviolentvixenreviews) | 33 comments That totally falls in the Urban Fantasy genre!

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments Sorry, so yeah, B.

message 8: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) I think we may need more information, so we can make a sound and rational decision. Could you please describe, in as much detail and citing the original text where necessary, these erotic scenes for us?

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments B if I had to choose from your list but otherwise agree with everyone else about the necessity of 'urban'..

The whole point, other than maximizing your potential within the category, is to make certain that no one buys your book under mistaken identity and it leave a sour taste in their mouth's. They will complain about it in the review.

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Helloooo? Michel? I believe someone asked for detailed, gritty description of your sex scenes? Where did we land on that?

Well, I already chose the title and cover for my current project. It will be titled 'AMERICAN SINNER' and will be a sequel to my Eternal Sinner Eternal Sinner by Michel Poulin . The very first paragraph describes in great detail a sex scene were the heroine (she's a very, very bad girl, by the way) is jumping the bones of one of her numerous dates. There are numerous use of the F-bomb and other normally censored words, but done in context and not in a gratuitous way. On average there are at least one and often more separate sex scenes per chapter in my incoming book, all explicitely described. My heroine finances her day university studies at the UCLA by working evenings as a stripper in a Los Angeles cabaret in 1973. The heroine possess powerful magical powers and spell-casting abilities, plus frequently meets with vampires, werewolves, hybrid human-angels, hybrid human-demons and one dragon (all under human shape disguise of course) at a small L.A. bar opening on a dark alley. The true nature of the heroine would qualify by itself the book as at least being a Fantasy book, or 'Urban Fantasy', as suggested by Matthew and Courtney. There are murders, kidnappings, trips to Hell, a decapitation (with a Katana, High Annie!) and Mafia and Yakuza bad deeds. It will however be nothing like the YA/NA Fantasy shows we presently see on TV.

So, what is your verdict?

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) Oh, man. Now we made him feel bad, guys...

*give Mr Michel a comforting hug*

Better?

(Okay, I'm totally joking so if this sounds condescending? Sorry!!)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

No offence taken, Annie. Up to now, the consensus seems to be that my incoming book should be classified as a mixed Erotica/Urban Fantasy novel. Do I have that right?

By the way, what does 'XD' means at the end of a post?

I don't really know how to explain it...I know what it means...but I'm not very good at explaining things...

It's a super happy smiley face. The D is the wide toothy smile and X is your eyes all squinted shut when you're sooo happy ^_~

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) Oh, it's sideways too. 1/4 turn clockwise should help ya, Mr Michel haha!

you nailed it.

UF.

but just b/c it has a lot of explicit sex--even multiple times in a chapter doesn't make it erotica, unless you strip out all of those scenes and have barely any semblance of a story remaining.

but Eternal Sinner sounds like and looks like erotica. maybe you should change it to a UF look and feel since the same heroine has supernatural powers (unless she's a succubus).

Erotic Romance and Erotica are two totally different things.

amazing how a single letter can make such a huge difference in the definition/connotation of word by changing it from an adjective to a noun.

Hehe, its cool, I was just messing with you. I might have been messing with you when I demanded a detailed account of the erotica too. Who can tell?

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments After reading the description, I think the right genre is 'contemporary', but allowing for 1973 - maybe 'historical', not sure whether 'fiction' or 'non-fiction' -:)
I have maybe 10 friends - graduates of UCLA business school, so I may ask what's more appropriate

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Kavy,

Do you feel the same when you write XD, and Awesome?

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments By the way are we talking about Amazon categories and genres or just how you yourself would categorize the book?

Tara wrote: "By the way are we talking about Amazon categories and genres or just how you yourself would categorize the book?"

I don't use Amazon services, so I want to decide which category to give myself to my book that would best describe it to potential readers.

message 38: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) You should create your own sub-sub-genre:

Dark Urban Fantasy (DUF)

Gritty Urban Fantasy (GUF)

Sexualized Urban Fantasy (SUF)

message 39: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) So, using Denise's choice, at the top of your blurb, you could state:
Gritty Urban Fantasy
or add "novel" to it.

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments I thinkk adding gritty feels a bit like gilding the lily since urban usually covers that. You have so little time to capture the attention of readers in a market that is flooded that every word has to do something vital. Each word in the genre should add a layer to what the book is really about. Michel is lucky enough to be able to craft this himself so I would make sure that the word choice 100% reflects what is in the book.

Denise
Thanks for the giggle.

message 41: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) I'd say B. Given all the types of characters and sexual content you mentioned i'd say B definitely qualifies.
