Aliens took control of the Earth and used the internet (might have been called something else in the book) to identify people to constitute a military force for them. They obtained the data itself as opposed to hacking into our systems which ended up being a key point to the human force later taking control of the ship.

The force they specified is assembled from people of many different countries. One of the humans guessed at the hidden skills (I think hacking) of one of the other people from a different country (due to past unconfirmed intelligence/espionage activities). I believe one of the characters was from Israel.

I think when the aliens came there ended up being fighting in the Middle East which they controlled by turning off everyone's power in that area (or something like that).

(It's not The Excalibur Alternative / Out of the Dark / Ranks of Bronze although those stories have a similar idea)
