Quantum (quantumkatana) Non-fiction is very broad, from:

* how to install a new toilet
* to how to become rich
* to how to be a more effective parent.

It's the highest daily grossing genre, surpassing even romance!

(see the 6-million-amazon-title report at http://authorearnings.com/2016-digita...)

What's hot? What's not?

Even more importantly, what are you writing and what gets you excited about it?

And another yay from me! Starting soon on my 2nd, also about money and personal finances.

Marie Silk | 1025 comments Aliens? I hope it's aliens.

I read a ton of non-fiction. History, science, biography, how-to, spiritual, paranormal, travel, finance, military, culture, cooking, religious, health, business, psychology...

I will probably write a non-fic someday, but I have too many fiction ideas on the back burner for now :).

message 6: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) What? "Effectively parenting your alien child"? Or "How to teach budgeting to your 6-digit alien child"?

message 7: by Marie Silk (last edited Sep 03, 2016 04:56PM) (new)

Marie Silk | 1025 comments I just want disclosure, Alex. Is that so much to ask?

:D

Also, two more non-fic books to add to my list!! Hooray! (Tara's and Jen's)

oh, you mean, UFO controversies, ancient aliens, planet x and such? are they included in non-fic?

for sure.

i'm all up-to-date on those. every time i see my dad he informs me on the latest news and has me watch some of those programs.

so, you're into those too?

(btw, conspiracy theories (like the assassination of JFK) would be included too.)

Yes, those are the exact ones I mean :). The weird thing is, when I want those books, I have to go to the "New Age" section at Barnes and Noble. So it's kind of a non-fiction category, but strangely placed in the bookstore if you ask me, and not popular enough to have its own aisle :(.

message 10: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) New age. Oh right, that's where they're shelved. How about on Amazon?

Well, for discussion purposes, we can put it here.

Interestingly w/ a planet being found in the Goldilocks zone in alphabproxima, only 4.2 ly away, it puts the idea of ancient aliens w/in reach even w/fusion power only.

So we should see a whole slew of that sub genre coming out w/in the next several months.

You might have to double your output to make enough money to buy all of the ancient alien books that are going to hit the shelves!

message 11: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) btw, i saw Parenting as a sub-category of non-fic & of course, "Managing Money" is also there.

besides those ones, what else do you think is popular? that is, the top 5?

how about any of the ones that Marie mentioned:

History
science
biography
how-to
spiritual
paranormal
travel
military
culture
cooking
religious
health
business
psychology

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments Non-fic is something I'm looking at too and toying with the idea to reclassify the first Oligarch into it. Just to see what happens -:)

Wonder whether religious books are sold under fic or non-fic

I figured that Oligarch was an autobiography and you were just being modest :D

you mean a college class, right? not a college admissions essay.

either way, you could start w/what they call free-writing. you just type--or speak or handwrite--whatever you're thinking. kind of like stream-of-consciousness.

No it's the college admissions thing

This is the topic that I'm writing about:

Most students have an identity, an interest, a talent that defines themselves in some ways. Tell us about yourself

And I'm thinking about writing about my hobbies and passions like writing

back in March, the company that i work for hosted a seminar with a college admissions officer. she said that for the essay, they don't necessarily need a great achievement but something that shows your personality. basically it's a way to add the human component into the process, which is mostly composed of numbers. they're also looking for the ability of the applicant to be able to express themselves effectively in a written format.

so, first, you are right to choose something that you're passionate about. if i recall correctly, some of the essays that the admissions officer brought up as examples of successful essays were ones that were specific, like a specific project or event, a turning point in your life.

if you haven't already, you might look around for some books on writing college admissions essay. sorry, i don't know of any off the top of my head.
