(view spoiler)[This book is getting a lot better than it was at the beginning. I get that it probably has a lower rating on here because it's a little slow, but I really like the pace of it and how the author takes time to describe Tea's everyday life.
I still want to know whose point of view the parts in italics are in. Is it someone that we haven't met before, and is the person they're talking to an older Tea?
I loved the part earlier on where Tea summons all of the undead in the Falling Leaf. It seems weird to me that she didn't get in trouble for it, but I'm glad she didn't. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I admit that I am a little confused by the timeline going on so far in the first few chapters. Is the woman that killed the daeva Tea? And if so, does that part of the story take place in the future? Like is she telling her story to this guy because he collects stories?

Tea has a lot of siblings and they all seem to have magic. She didn’t seem to have any though until she raised her older brother from the dead. If bone witches are looked down on then I wonder what her family’s reactions will be? Will they cast her out or will it change the way they feel about her? I’m guessing that it isn’t her fault what she is. I don’t think that the people that have magic in this world have any control over what type of magic they get, if they get any at all. Because it seems there are people that don’t have any magic too. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[How did Mykaela know about Tea? She just kind of showed up after she had raised her brother from the dead.

So a bone witch can only raise someone from the dead if they are willing and they cannot raise anyone from the dead that has a silver heartsglass. I am still not super sure what a heartsglass really is. Is the soul housed in it? A person’s essence? It’s kind of confusing.

It’s kind of weird that Fox doesn’t need to sleep or eat now. And that he doesn’t cast a shadow anymore. And he just seems strange. He and Tea are connected somehow. Mykaela called him her familiar.

Do the people really dislike bone witches so much simply because they are beholden to them? Because they are the only ones that can slay the daeva. I am curious about this false prince and the daeva that he created. How can they come back every so many years?

So can bone witches compel anyone and that is why people hate them so much?

This definitely must be the main character telling her story to someone. At first, the timeline felt a little wonky and was a bit jarring but I think that I am starting to get it. (hide spoiler)]

I am almost half way done with this book! It does start off a little slow and goes into detail about buildings and clothing and the world history and I kind of zone out, but once I got past all of that I started to enjoy the book more. I like that each chapter alternates with Tea's perspective. I feel that this first book is a great build up of Tea and her magic and the relationships she has with the people around her. Makes me excited to finish and start the second book!

A little bizarre thing is that the book mentions that Tea was born during a total eclipse and yesterday we had a total solar eclipse!! (hence the people staying over)

I am on chapter six, and I forgot I love how different this story is from the usual fantasy genre.

I also like that the chapters bounce back and forth between two narrators, Tea and the Bar. Because it gives us two different perspectives of situations that Tea gives us the past information on and the Bar gives as a storyteller from the present.

I sometimes find it hard to picture some of the characters. I will have to go back and see if I missed it because I can’t remember if Tea was described. But there are many similarities to the Middle East but all Asia with the geisha inspired Asha. Very unique!

Not sure what the italics chapters are - I’m guessing she’s conversing with a creature in the future or something? Odd. It seems like she’s living in exile in those chapters.

I don’t fully get the Heartglass thing, does it actually take their hearts? But the Mykaela bone witch seems cool. The back and forth between present and future is kinda odd, it’s like she’s telling her life story to this dude. The bezoar was pretty cool, Mykaela seems like a great teacher. Not sure how I feel about Fox lol. Same goes for Tea, she’s quite childish so far - saying rude things to the king. The love interests she mentioned seem promising teehee.

The oracle was kinda creepy, and I wonder what the prophecy meant - and the creepy apparition too? Interesting. What exactly is hua? Zoya and the other girls forced her to wear Shadi’s clothes, damn they suck. I still don’t fully have a grasp on the world, but it’s interesting so far. Also reminds me a bit of the Scarlet Alchemist idk why. At least they led her to the prince! (hide spoiler)]

Damn Zoya sucks, but it was intense that she raised all those rodents and skeletons. Wait am I understanding correctly that she raised a dead king as well as others?

Mykaela gave her heart (and most of her powers) to this king, who then basically took back his own heart aw poor thing. I have a feeling she’ll die at some point. I forgot who kana is lmao. Was she another apprentice? Tea is slowly learning all about the Asha ways, kinda nice. The heartforger was odd, he seems cool but I can’t believe Tea willingly gave him her memories wtf. That seems stupid as hell. Linkh is quite cool, he wants to dance like a woman! What’s Kalen’s problem geez. I wonder if he’s into Kance himself? I’m having a hard time keeping all the side characters straight honestly and I’m not sure where this is going, but I’m ready for it to speed up.

The thing that followed them was a skeleton? I wonder who send it. Why are like all the names the same omg Khalen - Kance and Khalad, can the author not come up with any other names lmao? So the heartforger’s apprentice was Kance’s brother? Huh. I wonder if she actually hears someone else’s voice in her mind, since there are lines in italics and then she actually says it - it’s so odd. I hate Zoya and it’s annoying that she’ll be with them - although I don’t fully get what’s even going on lol I’m starting to get bored a little. (hide spoiler)]

I don’t get most of the world and the words that they’re using honestly. I mean, shaxsiat, ehteram?? I hate how they don’t explain anything and just assume we know the language or something.

The dragon was cool, I wish we’d get more of that. Is he now in her mind or something? Coooool. Poor Mykaela though :/ not sure how I feel about the other sisters. I wonder what happened to fox in those future chapters. Also, he’s definitely going to end up with that princess. I’m guessing they killed Fox then - since she’s talking about revenge for someone she loved and it’s BS if that’ll be the prince and all that bc they barely have any depth so far. Not sure about this one honestly, it sounds so promising but it’s SO SLOW. At least she’ll be fully Asha now, and finally able to fight those daeva (although she doesn’t want to fight them but understand them bc apparently they sacrifice parts of their soul or something?? She became the dragon, which was confusing but kinda cool. I wonder who else was in the mind, are we not going to learn who? I don’t trust Khalad and I still don’t get why she’s giving them memories like an idiot. Why would you willingly let someone inside your head when you’re this important. Still don’t trust Zoya, but apparently it was Kana who was faceless (no clue what that even means) and controlled the daeva. I’m still so confused lnao. Is Zoya into Shadi, is that what her other secret is? Soooo confuuuused.

Interesting so she’s not on speaking terms with Fox but he is in fact alive. Damn so it is Kalen!! Love that. But i can’t believe he’ll die and she’s only 17 in these future chapters?? And who tf is this bard. I hate the lack of answers in this, and apparently she’ll work with Aena/Kana in the future, which is odd. Not sure whether I liked this, it was insanely slow yet I’m still confused as hell, probably also because I started skipping a lot. I just don’t understand it all idk. (hide spoiler)]

It was really neat!! We didnt get to see the whole thing because it was really cloudy here, but it got completely dark for like 5 mins at 330pm. it was really cool to watch!

Im at chapter 10 and really liking it so far! More than I thought I would. But I started a new job this week and have been really busy with that so Im behind on my reading!

This is definitely a slower story, but I never found myself bored or uninterested.
I really loved the back and forth between present and past each chapter. I think it helped to propel the story forward, and also has made me so interested in reading the next one! (hide spoiler)]

I get all your confusion lol. I still dont completely understand about the daeva, what they are or why they are raised, or why some are raised from the dead and some run rampant.
Haha also I dont totally understand the faceless, but I think that its someone who uses dark magic but like in an evil way? They remind me of venin from fourth wing if you've read that. Like a magic user that gets corrupted by using the magic.
