Nature was very much a part of the story. We have the seas, the various types of land that David had to cross to return home and also the weather. The author was able to give us a picture of the Highland through the writing.
There were a lot of references to the heather, the hidden caves, the rocks that made good hideouts and of course the rain.
Nature was as much an obstacle and a shelter, an ally and another foe to deal with. It provides a good overview of the Highlands landscape.
