I think there was probably a great lesson on not to let things that appear to be impossible to overcome stop you from looking for a way out.
I would add that it showed he was thinking like a child and not practically looking for a solution, it also showed that we all need people to help guide us, teach us and that we can rely on.
True, if he had been a bit more practical and less focused on his hunger, he would probably have figured out how he could cross the creek without the fishermen telling him.
