That was supposed to be that I've had Otto since he was 8 weeks old.

Thanks Christine, he is my baby. Since my children are grown and out of the house, he keeps me going.

I even watched a programme showing how a US sweet called Tootsie Rolls (I think!) were made!! Have you heard of them?!

message 580: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Tootsie rolls are an American institution, Janet, like Cheerios and Milky Ways! They have been around longer than I have. Every person in America almost certainly has had a tootsie roll, if not thousands of them! My fave form of the tootsie roll is the Tootsie Roll Pop. It's a fat round lollipop (solid dense lollipop that is very long- lasting) with a tootsie roll hidden in the center. YUM!!! I must have had over a hundred of those as a kid. Especially liked the cherry ones and the grape ones.

message 581: by Malina (new)

Malina | 775 comments I love tootsie rolls, haven't eaten one in ages

Tootsie Roll Industries is one of the largest candy manufacturers in the world. More than 64 million Tootsie Rolls are made daily.

According to the company website, the original (and still current) recipe calls for the inclusion of the previous day's batch. "As such, there's (theoretically) a bit of Leo's very first Tootsie Roll in every one of the sixty four million Tootsie Rolls that Tootsie produces each day."

That's fascinating stuff, Malina. I was fortunate enough to grab a tootsie roll out of a basket of candy in a vet office a few months ago. Janet, you have to try one. They are pretty unique.

I've certainly never heard back them. Don't think they're available here. They did interview the current president of the company in Chicago.
