I don't think it was a Sparks book. Plus, the book a remember has too many sex scenes in it to be Sparks. Also, I don't think the mother of the child dies, she left or wasn't around. Thank you though, this book sounds interesting it self.
Also, the characters were in their late 20's maybe early 30's, the kid was in 2nd or 3rd grade.
Also, the kid is the book, doesn't talk at all at first, but gets more comfortable with the teacher, and starts talking again. Other kids wont play with the kid, the fits the kid has can become violent, sometimes hurting the teacher.

it's present day, United States, I want to say the dad is a mechanic or construction worker

Does his son have a learning disorder (e.g., dyslexic, ADD/ADHD)?
2015, no, I don't think the child had a learning disability, I think his behavior was due to not having the mother around

Contemporary romance
What I remember is that it's about a guy that has a young kid, doesn't talk, throws fits at school. The child is moved to a new school and is placed in a lady's class where she begins to help the child. The dad and teacher fall in love, the teacher later loses her job at the school.
