What year did you read this book? I find "a few years ago" means different things to different people in this large group.

i remember the author is a female
the Circus part comes at the end of the book
the guy is found drowned in Thames but he is alive just does not know any memory of his past but has all the skills
so he starts working in a slaughterhouse and then he has the anatomy skills ...

It begins with a man being found drowned in Thames, but he is not dead, only cannot remember who he is, so people who wanted to rob his stuff take him to work as a butcher, he is a good butcher because in his previous life (and he had many lives) he was a scientist and knew a lot about anatomy. In the course of the plot he changes many professions, tries to kill himself many times with no success, at the end of the book works in a circus and falls in love with a woman who can read other people's thoughts. They run away from the circus..
